Hello all, usual good wishes.

For 2 weeks running Morrison's have not had any Maris Piper potatoesshock!

I'm a tad miffed, as imo they are the best for roast potatoes, knock King Edwards into a cocked hat!

Is it only here, or have others noticed?

We buy great potatoes from our fish man they are very good for making chips and roasties smile not sure what kind they are.

They're on offer in lidl at the moment ?

Potatoes shouldn’t sprout if the are kept cool and dark! If you have space buying a sack of potatoes is a great economy!

Following my comment yesterday - plenty in Morrisons here today.

All potatoes will sprout and go soft if you keep them in a warm place, no problem with keeping them in the fridge as long as it’s not below freezing.
I can’t think why chilling would affect diabetics, potatoes that get warm have higher sugar levels, you would have to eat a large quantity to make a difference, diabetics usually have a regulated diet

I buy 4kg at farm shop for about £2.50, reds but not sure what sort, apart from being a really good chip/mash spud, they’re always big, I hate peeling the small ones too.

I’m going shopping with daughter in law today, and the greengrocer near her has Golden Wonder and Cyprus potatoes, both excellent chippers and roasters. Are they mostly a Scottish thing?

Thanks Springy, that's a great help!grin

BTW, I disagree that King Edwards make the best roasties (sorry, can't remember who posted that) Maris Piper do!

At Lidl this morning, there were stacks of Maris Piper, probably because they were on offer. 79p for 2.5kg. I bought a bag and thought of you, Phoenix.

I thought you weren’t supposed to keep potatoes in the fridge? Something to do with the cold changing them in some way and making them unsuitable fir people who are diabetic (or pre diabetic).

WOODMOUSE49 Sun 08-Nov-20 22:45:19

Plenty of them in my Morrisons and also Sainsbury's (Cornwall)

SpringyChicken Sun 08-Nov-20 22:44:20

Plenty of Maris Piper at the local Lidl last Monday, Phoenix.

Calendargirl Sun 08-Nov-20 20:07:42

I buy a big sack MayBee as it works out so much cheaper than small bags.

Sorry Phoenix, yes, it’s obviously easier if you have a garage to keep them in.

I buy potato and onion bags from Dunelm
I have a potato bag but it has never stopped them sprouting so I've started keeping them in the fridge.
A very large paper sackful from the farm used to keep well in the garage when the family was still at home.

I have just had a moan about the Waitrose 'any size will do' potatoes from Waitose so I hope our order of Maris Piper potatoes from Tesco arrive this week.

King Edwards are lovely for crunchy roast potatoes but Maris Piper are good and don't go in the water.

Plenty of Maris Pipers in Tesco, Asda and Lidl down here - I buy them for chips.
We also bought a 25kg bag of Wilja potatoes for £8 from a local farm. My OH spreads them out to make sure they are completely dry and then put them into hessian bags or paper sacks. They keep fine in the cool shed, and get covered with a blanket in case of frosts.

No garage here, Calendargirl sad

MayBee70 Sun 08-Nov-20 19:12:54

I buy potato and onion bags from Dunelm and my potatoes keep for ages. Although I’ve never understood people buying a huge sack of them to use throughout the winter. I’ve also found that organic carrots last for a long time, too. Maris Piper are the only potatoes I’ve bought for years but the mention of Wilma rang a bell from the distant past. I used to like those. Mind you I have developed (as a COVID/no deal brexit stockpiler )a fondness for Smash recently.

jerseygirl Sun 08-Nov-20 18:43:51

Oh and sainsburys too

jerseygirl Sun 08-Nov-20 18:43:24

Plenty maris pipers in morrisons here, also asda and lidl

Calendargirl Sun 08-Nov-20 18:41:38

We keep our potatoes in their brown sack in the garage Phoenix, and touch wood, they don’t sprout until much later into the spring, unless they get too warm.

Iam64 Sun 08-Nov-20 18:41:36

Strange. I've just had a bag delivered with my Tesco shop. I'm about to dish up our meal, which includes Maris Piper roasties

Davidhs Sun 08-Nov-20 18:11:03

Maris Piper are an old variety primarily used for chips, which is also why they are good for Roasties, we use a modern variety Markies a good alternative. King Edwards have been around for a very long time and are expensive to grow.

LauraNorder Sun 08-Nov-20 17:40:29

Holyhead Tesco delivered our Welsh Maris Pipers today. Only one week since March that they substituted with Welsh Whites, the worst potatoes ever.

phoenix Sun 08-Nov-20 17:29:36

Calendargirl we have a local supplier who grows Wilja, but as mentioned upthread, I just don't seem able to keep potatoes, so tend to buy them weekly.
