I’m making Mary Berry’s sausagemeat lasagne (again !) for a couple of friends tonight. Any interesting thoughts about what to serve with it ? ( Garlic bread disagrees strongly with me)

I shall do sago’s salad . I think anything mayonnaisey would not work.
I may get a focaccia from our wonderful local artisan baker.

To all those doubting the sausage meat lasagne, it is an absolute favourite with friends and family, many of whom are proper “foodies”. This coming from someone who lived in Italy for four years by the way !

I always use fresh lasagne sheets by the way.

Celeriac coleslaw, also from Waitrose. Delish if you like celeriac of course.
Quick and easy salad dressing:
Olive oil
S&P
Tarragon Vinegar - add ingredients to taste
I also add some Demerara sugar, very small amount, stir.

Plain green salad with a good dressing would be perfect for me. I think lasagne is rich enough so wouldn't want more tomatoes or cheese with it I might add some good bread as an extra filler for others though.

This salad goes down well in our house, especially with Lasagne or Moussaka Lucca.
I spooned cous cous over the top and the drizzle is balsamic glaze.

Coleslaw definitely.

Sorry, but you lost me at the 'sausage meat?'. With lasagne I do love a few crispy chips ha ha.

Thanks for this thread. It has given me a good idea of what to cook for Sunday, when DS and family are coming to lunch. They are vegetarians so it will be veggie lasagne with salad, followed by strawberry gateau.

The recipe looks good Lucca

It wouldn’t necessarily be fatty if instead of buying sausage meat as such, you bought best quality, very low fat sausages instead and just squished the sausage meat out - it’s so easy.

That’s what I do every Christmas when making the usual sausagemeat, sage and onion stuffing.

I don’t usually question Hail Mary Berry, but sausagemeat lasagne - seriously?

Agreed- must be very fatty.

But yes, salad. You can make a green beans salad, as they do in France. Cook beans al dente, cool, cut a shallot very thinly and make a dressing- cut a piece of garlic in half and wipe all over the inside of the bowl first with it- a garlic hint not too strong.

I like salad with lasagne. Salads can be imaginative as you like these days. If there are more than just us then I add garlic bread as well.

Have you tried it? It’s an absolute winner, it doesn’t need bechamel etc. Honestly

Sago

Try a base of baby spinach leaves.
Blanched fine green beans, cucumber, spring onion and rocket leaves.
Add Parmesan shavings and a few finely chopped basil leaves.
Now make some croutons, and top the salad with these, they absorb the dressing and give some crunch and texture.

A salad like this is best served on a platter or very shallow bowl.

Oh thank you, sounds lovely! I’m not a spring onion fan but could substitute or miss out.

Ciabatta bread or rolls, very Italian. Then a salad as suggested or maybe asparagus which is still in season.

Adding sundried tomatoes makes an ordinary salad more interesting.

Don’t need more carbs!

A lovely summer salad, freshly picked with a nice dressing is the way to go?

It’d need to be freshly picked from waitrose ! I have no garden.

?that will do

Anything green in the way of salad or baby vegetables. A clean taste.
I wouldn't want any more tomato or cheese if that is what is already in the lasagne.

shysal Fri 18-Jun-21 08:06:13

I would serve tenderstem broccoli or green beans.

Nonogran Fri 18-Jun-21 08:06:10

A quality Waitrose salad with maybe a platter of good tomatoes & Mozerella cheese with Basil leaves scattered over it? Olive oil & balsamic dressing lightly added. Avocado in there somewhere? Look up a dressing recipe on line. The possibility is endless. Just being together for a meal will be lovely.

Definitely a nice salad my Granddaughter loves raw sugarsnap peas too.

A light coleslaw.
