Anyone else noticed a lot of gaps and empty shelves in the supermarket fruit and veg aisles?

Kamiso Fri 02-Jul-21 18:52:49

Not problems here either. We use Lidl as our corner store and they are well stocked!

Witzend Fri 02-Jul-21 18:43:21

I haven’t seen any shortages at all - outer SW London. We mostly shop at Asda, with lesser forays to M&S and Waitrose.

Delicious Bluebelle. I love fresh new broad beans.

BlueBelle Fri 02-Jul-21 18:18:23

My mornings work from my allotment no shortages for me ?

Callistemon
From your link. 30,000 HGV tests were lost last year because of covid That puts a different slant on things.

Calendargirl Fri 02-Jul-21 17:43:40

Our local Tesco doesn’t seem short, but not a lot of choice in veg.

No, but M&S has moved all the shelves around and now I can’t find anything. hmm

So has ours and there's not much I want from there now either!

No, but M&S has moved all the shelves around and now I can’t find anything. hmm

We have a small Aldi just a few minutes from where I live and that's always hopeless too mrswoo . And yet the Aldi about 3miles away is always fully stocked with both fresh foods and tinned stuff. They had so much fresh fruit yesterday that they were selling it at 30% off because they were making way for fresh deliveries.

Lots of empty shelves in my local Asda - but then there always is. Especially in the fruit and veg aisles. It’s a pretty hopeless shop.

There are many reasons:

If there is a shortage of HGV drivers it is mainly down to the change in tax/NI laws regarding IR35, posted a summary photo.

I have noticed gaps in all food items, be it tinned, packets or fresh.
Problems with drivers, problems with items from EU; the paperwork involved has become a nightmare and the continent seems to hold on to British lorries longer than strictly necessary [ducks down to avoid flying bullets!]

Ladyleftfieldlover Fri 02-Jul-21 16:01:56

No

Callistemon Fri 02-Jul-21 15:59:56

Where's Grandad1943 when you need him?

Whitewavemark2 Fri 02-Jul-21 15:58:41

Yes certainly gaps not just in fruit and veg.

Drivers an issue. They’ve all moved back to the EU.

Callistemon Fri 02-Jul-21 15:55:03

Everything I asked for from Tesco has just been delivered; no substitutions at all this week. The potatoes look fine although Jersey Royals weren't available.
I didn't order fruit because we've got soft fruits and gooseberries ready to harvest in the garden.

M0nica Fri 02-Jul-21 15:53:54

Lots of gaps in every section of the supermarkets round here. Several had notices saying that this was because of problems with getting deliveries, probably because of the shortage of delivery drivers. It seems another 16,000 lorry drivers are required.

Many EU citizens, especially, Eastern Europeans worked in the transport industry and they returned home after lockdown happened and will not be coming back. As we are having an extension built, we have a lot of delivery drivers calling at our door and I have noticed how few are Eastern European now compared with before COVID

I mostly go to the farm shop, that’s abundant. The odd veg I request in our grocery delivery is always there and none showing out of stock online.

Ealdemodor Fri 02-Jul-21 15:52:10

There is a serious shortage of lorry drivers.
My hubs is a lorry driver, due to retire at the end of the year.
Do you ever see a young one?

greenlady102 Fri 02-Jul-21 15:46:53

no.

Bakingmad0203 Fri 02-Jul-21 15:46:32

Yes in Tesco. It’s been like that for a few weeks, also very short sell by dates and some of the fruit and veg should be taken off the shelves as it’s going soft. Don’t start me on their potatoes - even the Jerseys at £1.50 a pound are looking poor.
I’m growing my own fruit and veg but it’s not ready yet.

AGAA4 Fri 02-Jul-21 15:45:42

Plenty of fruit and veg here too.

muse Fri 02-Jul-21 15:39:59

No. In Morrison’s on Wednesday and lots of choice and full shelves.

Chewbacca Fri 02-Jul-21 15:21:24

No, not around here. Aldi fresh fruit and vegetables aisles were overflowing yesterday.
