BRITISH SPUDS

The problem is general. We are in France and our neighbour welcomed us back with a big bucket of spud. The first one I went to use was hollow inside and rotting in parts.

My thoughts exactly midgey.

No problem with early or main crop potatoes, onions are sound too, but I use a farm shop as well. The ‘earliest’ are from Somerset, I’ve had some Cypriot ones too which are lovely.

Were they old or new potatoes? Old potatoes have been kept in a clamp all winter and spring, and in the summer often have black marks or on extreme occasions black or brown in the middle.

I’ve not noticed it with potatoes but I have with onions. They can look fine on the outside but when I cut into them they are soft and brown in the middle. All 3 onions I had yesterday were binned.

What ever is cake?

The farm doesn't use 'cake' on the potato fields, thank Heavens!

The weather's been bad this year, yet still I find they're best bought at the farm - and far tastier.

is it because it has been so wet? some of the fields by me grow potatoes and the fields have been very wet all year
