Where is all the tinned asparagus?

I have seen it in B&M and Home Bargains, I don’t like it in any form but my mother prefers tinned.

There is still asparagus in Aldi and Waitrose near me. Why not freeze your own? Not sure where it’s from but I often pick up a bunch and have it with vinaigrette for lunch ? Unless it’s to be used in soup or something ‘soggy’ the thought of canned asparagus really doesn’t appeal ….

I use it with peppers and artichokes to make a store cupboard paella. Sometimes tinned snails as well!

The tins would make a nice, out of season asparagus soup, wouldn’t they? You’d probably need a few, though.

I only buy fresh asparagus when it’s in season in the U.K.

My mother used to do that, asparagus wrapped in brown bread and butter. Delicious it was.
There is plenty of tinned asparagus on the shelves here in France, also jars. We keep it in stock, along with tinned peppers and jars of artichoke hearts. We always used to bring it back from Spain where it is much cheaper.
It is different from fresh asparagus (which we grow in the garden) but tasty and a very useful store cupboard back up.

I ve never in my life seen or heard of tinned asparagus

It was probably way back in the 60s, but I seem to remember pieces of tinned asparagus being wrapped in slices of ham as party nibbles chez nous. Along with the mushroom vol au vents my mother made from scratch.
She’d be the first to raid M&S party nibbles now, I’m sure.
No such thing then alas.

Try www.frenchclick.co.uk. They sell the white tinned asparagus. Delicious....

None of our supermarkets sell frozen asparagus. Can’t get fresh as I’m away until late Christmas Eve. Anyway I find it’s a bit woody at this time of year.
But thanks for your replies.

That’s a crime against Asparagus ?

Good one grin
Never heard of tinned asparagus?
Get fresh.

Morrison’s do frozen asparagus spears, and you can get canned or spears in jars from Ocado.

Casdon Fri 19-Nov-21 17:39:26

Nope, it’s not disappeared at all, there is plenty of choice of both tinned and jarred asparagus still available. You could try Ocado OP, do an online order of your normal weekly shop from there. It’s personal taste, if you like it ignore other people’s opinions!

Tinned asparagus disappeared from the market when fresh asparagus became available all year round. Apart from a few people like you silversurf, most people prefer fresh and there is not enough demand to justify producing the product for sale in this country.

I have been caught out like that before, when I like a product, but clearly the rest of the population have moved, on so it is discontinued.

One of the many good things about my daughter living in the NE is Booths. I never knew of them before.

Nonogran Fri 19-Nov-21 17:19:44

Tinned asparagus!? Oh no! Slimy green sticks in a tin. (Tongue in cheek. No offence meant)
As others suggest, frozen might be available? Fresh from thousands of air miles away too?

Sago Fri 19-Nov-21 17:17:28

Do you mean the white asparagus?
I know Epicure used to do it, Waitrose or Booths would be your best bet.
I do agree though, fresh is best..

Deedaa Fri 19-Nov-21 17:17:17

I much prefer fresh but usually only eat it when the English asparagus comes into the shops (not because of Brexit "Buy British" but because of airmiles) I did buy some Peruvian last week because it was going out of date and reduced. Having travelled all that way it seemed better to use it than waste it.

Can you get fresh or frozen - does it have to be tinned?

Judy54 Fri 19-Nov-21 17:12:40

Never heard of tinned asparagus. Why not buy fresh?

silversurf Fri 19-Nov-21 17:05:19

My special treat with Christmas dinner. We have seven or eight different supermarkets in our local town and none of them stock it.
I could get 12 tins on Amazon, which would be very expensive, but I am the only one who eats it. Also don’t have room in my cupboard for that amount.
Any suggestions please?
