Exciting Thread! Freezing Milk?

I'm just off to the shops to get some milk for the freezer, we have a prediction of snow. I've got to buy pints to keep them upright as this is a drawer freezer here. I miss my huge freezer!

I regularly freeze 4 pt containers of semi skimmed milk. I find it takes 51 hours to defrost in the fridge ( how sad of me to know that!!) If we are going away for a few days I often get a carton out just before we go knowing it will be good for use when I get back.

We freeze four pint bottles of milk too and defrost them on a concrete outhouse floor. That takes a couple of days in cold weather. I like the fridge defrosting idea but we rarely go away so haven't done that. I'm storing it for future use though

It’s fine for freezing. Put on a tray to defrost just as you would for most other things from the freezer.

Does anyone remember getting the little bottles of milk in school in the winters of the 1960s. I remember it well because the cream at the top was semi frozen and I loved it. Some children wouldn’t have it so there was extras what a treat.

Yes, I was milk monitor and had to shove the paper straws for the whole class through the semi-frozen milk.
Then in the summer everyone complained because it was warm and smelt sour (no fridges in those days!).

In the days when I had a huge chest freezer (not for my huge chest) I too used to keep a couple of plastic bottles of milk for emergency use. We had just moved to the country and our first winter here saw us snowed in so I took to keeping basic essentials such as a sliced loaf and grated cheese and milk. So we could have Welsh Rarebit/macaroni cheese/ tea!

Funnily enough I’ve just frozen 2 pints - we had too much and I’d forgotten to cancel today’s (we still have a milkman.).

I’ve always found that it freezes absolutely fine - I’ve often done it. However we only have skimmed or semi skimmed - might be different if you have full cream.

Might add that milkman has been very handy lately for a few little Christmas presents - treat-type consumables for adult family.
Plus a Christmas biscuit decorating kit - gingerbread men and Christmas trees - will be very popular with visiting Gdcs next weekend. ?

I’ve often frozen milk. It defrosts and seems exactly like milk that hasn’t been frozen. Hth.

I have one pint of semiskimmed delivered on two days a week, but use slightly less, so it builds up gradually. When I am a whole pint ahead I freeze it for those times when I want a cheese sauce, a rice pudding, or to have milky drinks. I have never has a container split, and I can't tell the difference in coffee or on cereal, or in Ovaltine. It gets a shake before opening. I have heard that whole milk, where the cream rises to the top, tends to separate, but I have never frozen that so can't comment.

I have frozen semi skimmed milk for years, and am still here to tell the tale.

To me, I can taste no difference once the milk has thawed, and it means that we always have milk in the house.

Milk tends to separate when it’s frozen. Freezing it in an ice cube tray is handy for making chilled drinks in summer.

I often freeze milk it does come out slightly more watery though so you do need a good shake up but I ve never read the cartons so done it in ignorance and nothings ever split

I regularly freeze whole milk - never had a problem and use as normal. I often transfer to smaller container and don't fill too full. Plastic bottles or the cardboard cartons work fine

Remove the sealed cover under the cap and freeze standing up.

If I'm going away, there's some in the freezer on my return.

Agree, sometimes it does need a little shake. Wondering if it depends where I get it?

I once defrosted 4 pints of milk in the sink overnight, when I came down in the morning the plastic container had split and most of it had run away. It will tell you on the side of the container if it’s suitable for freezing, but it’s nothing to do with the milk, I phoned and checked.

Yes they can , it happened to me, didn’t realise it until was defrosting , milk everywhere. ?

Make rice pudding or similar pudding or custard or use to make a sauce with a béchamel sauce. Use it to replace coconut milk in a curry. Hot chocolate or milky coffee other milk drinks.

Since Covid and unreliable shopping trips I freeze milk all the time. I use it on cereals, in tea and it even still froths for my cappuccino! It just needs a shake before using to even out the texture

I regularly freeze semi-skimmed milk in case we run out of fresh before I can get to the shops again. It does change a little, but a good shake reduces that and, generally, I can't tell the difference. Any difference in taste makes it more like longlife or whole milk, so not unpleasant.

I’ve frozen semi skimmed milk before, but find the taste is altered after thawing. Good as a standby, but thawed milk tastes a bit strange in tea and coffee.
