Hello
Oh dear. I haven’t made my splendid puff pastry mince pies yet (mainly due to DH having no appetite, which thankfully seems to have returned).

Anyway, I have two packs of Jus-Roll in the fridge - bb. 21/11/21

Should I go for it, or bin it?

Thank you, and a Happy and Peaceful Christmas! x

Definitely use it. I used some that was a year old once and it was fine.

Fat can go rancid. I would bin it.

grannyqueenie Tue 21-Dec-21 19:01:50

Unless it smells rancid or looks slimy when you open it then I’d use it. But that’s me, you’ll have to make your own decision!

Buy some shortening fat, hard block of Stork or similar & make your own fresh pastry to replace it!
Bin the ready made because I think the fat can make it taste a bit “off” maybe?

GrannyLaine Tue 21-Dec-21 18:45:16

Best before dates are just a guide. Pastry doesn't suddenly 'go off'. How many times have we seen perfectly good fruit and vegetables (even flowers ffs) sold off because they are close to best before / use by dates?? It's become a nonsense and is eroding people's ability to make a common sense judgement. If it looks and smells okay I would definitely use it.

Pastry goes sour and the freezing of it masks this. For the small amount it costs, is it worth it ?

SueDonim Tue 21-Dec-21 18:42:57

A month? Bin it.

MayBeMaw Tue 21-Dec-21 18:40:11

One month- might be OK - have a look at the colour - if greyish, bin it.

Grandmajean Tue 21-Dec-21 18:33:28

I'd bin it because I'd worry about having eaten it. I , too ,am Mrs bin it. My DH would say it'll be fine. Not convinced.

Zoejory Tue 21-Dec-21 18:26:42

Definitely use it!

Good grief! What on earth is there in pastry that would cause illness?

It will be fine. Believe me.

and BB means Best Before .... not do not use.

Use it and I'm sure your pies will be truly delicious.

Kali2 Tue 21-Dec-21 18:24:12

I'd use it.

EllanVannin Tue 21-Dec-21 18:23:51

I'd bin it or you'd be wondering after you'd eaten it if it was alright. I couldn't be doing with the worry of it.Then again, my second name is " Mrs bin-it " anyway, no matter what it is grin

Riverwalk Tue 21-Dec-21 18:11:46

Registered nurse here - bin it, your husband is CEV is he not?

If it were for myself I'd use it but not for other people - why take the risk?

Elizabeth27 Tue 21-Dec-21 17:42:07

I would use it, flour and fat do not go off and it will be cooked.

You would see if it had mould on it.

Mamardoit Tue 21-Dec-21 17:41:36

I would look at it before binning. It's flour, fat and water and it's been kept cold. If it looks grey and greasy bin it. If not I would use it. You're not eating it raw.

NotTooOld Tue 21-Dec-21 17:40:27

I would bin. Can't get medical help these days should you need it. Better safe than sorry and all that.

Calendargirl Tue 21-Dec-21 17:37:51

As others have said, if it looks and smells ok, I would certainly use it. What is it made of? Flour, water, fat or oil?

And if it’s been kept in the fridge…..

GrannyGravy13 Tue 21-Dec-21 17:33:16

If it looks ok and smells ok I would use it.
(I used puff pastry yesterday which was 1 week out of date)

BlueBelle Tue 21-Dec-21 17:30:46

No use it it ll be fine I never take any notice unless it’s about 3 years out ? it ll be fine only a few days difference

FannyCornforth Tue 21-Dec-21 17:30:37

Ooh, we’re definitely dividing opinion here…

Septimia Tue 21-Dec-21 17:29:58

If it looks and smells OK, I'd use it. It's going to be cooked, which will kill some germs. Maybe check the taste after cooking.

FannyCornforth Tue 21-Dec-21 17:29:50

Use by
But they would say that, wouldn’t they?

Daisend1 Tue 21-Dec-21 17:29:04

Don't take chances. Bin it.
Can you not, say for just this once, make your own or persuade H, it was his lost appetite that prevented you using it, to go and buy some.?

FannyCornforth Tue 21-Dec-21 17:28:45

Hmm Maizie, that’s what my instincts say…

MaizieD Tue 21-Dec-21 17:22:12

'Best before' or 'use by' ?

I'd open one and investigate. If it's slimy and disgusting, bin. If it looks OK, use...
