Like this Grandmabatty but this one had summer strawberries in place of raspberries.

A twist on a bread and butter pudding - very light as the recipe uses Brioche sweet bread. (buy a sliced loaf in M&S Food or other supermarket).
It has the usual egg custard poured over the layered, buttered brioche slices, add currants then a generous sprinkling of frozen raspberries which give the whole dessert a vibrant colour.
Serve with pouring cream or creme fraiche.

It doesn't have to be cold, although that would make it easier. I haven't made Baked Alaska for years! Good shout.

Pavlova or a roulade I find goes down well.

I am debating dessert too either Jamie's Winter Bombe or Mary Berries mixed berry Pavlova

I was going to say apple crumble and fresh cream. which most people seem to like with Bramley apples . unless burnt (which mine was).
But I think you're looking for a cold dessert. In which case I can't add to the list. Except Baked Alaska, a 1960s invention.

Lots of great ideas. Thanks

Anything lemony is a good option, lemon tart served with ice cream or an easy lemon mousse. Agree with others on the Pavlova or an Eton mess, I find that always goes down well.

mumofmadboys Tue 28-Dec-21 19:35:59

I agree pavlova. Simple to make and looks good

How about a simple vanilla sponge or chiffon cake? Then they can have both without guilt, since they go so well together.

chelseababy Tue 28-Dec-21 19:00:44

Pavlova

Lazy here, I’d buy, maybe two luxury ice creams and bake some biscuits/ shortbread.
Actually, I’m not a baker, so I’d buy the lot, would rather spend time with my guests than baking.

Tub of Creme Fraiche. Mix in some strong coffee and sugar to taste. Half fill some wine glasses. Whip some cream and make another layer.
Crumble up a couple of Cadbury Flakes on top.

Cappuccino Dessert. ?

Good ideas. Thank you. As I'm making a fruit salad, I won't do poached pears, although they are delicious. Lemon posset sounds possible. I love cranachan. I'll look at that too

Grannynannywanny Tue 28-Dec-21 18:02:01

Cranachan? I had it recently when my son and daughter in law served it and it was delicious

I was going to say Lemon posset, light tasty and can be made in advance.

Calendargirl Tue 28-Dec-21 17:48:00

Lemon posset?

GrannyGravy13 Tue 28-Dec-21 17:34:43

Poached pears they can be served with cream or crème fraiche.

Really simple no stress desert.

I'm having guests for dinner on New Year's Day. I always make a fruit salad but would like to offer something else too. I don't want trifle or cheesecake or profiteroles as we had them on Christmas Day. The main course will be steak pie. Does anyone have any ideas? It could be homemade or bought.
