Hi, my granddaughter has decided to become a vegan. Does anyone know of any good cheese and mayo alternatives please?

Carooline Sun 27-Mar-22 10:59:24

I just have to say that the comments made on this post are so kind & helpful.
So many times people make rude comments/personal comments when you say you’re vegetarian/vegan.
Thank you everyone x

I have tried vegan applewood & the smell is overpowering when you melt it in the microwave. It grossed out the rest of the family. It’s ok with jacket potatoes but the texture when melted resembles the sticky, stretchy glue they use to attach membership cards to letters in the post.
The Tesco’s vegan Wensleydale with cranberry was unpleasant.
The Sainsburys vegan cheese made from coconut smells of feet.
In short, I’ve yet to find an enjoyable vegan cheese.

Having said that, pizza express has a vegan pizza that’s okish.

You’d be better off with other vegan sandwich fillings like hummus, nut butters, smoked tofu slices, falafel, or tahini.
Leon sell a love burger sauce that is delicious. Tastes like ketchup, mayo, mustard & dill and is sooo good with Linda McCartney veggie burgers & vegan brioche style burger rolls from Sainsburys.

We are not vegan, but DiL is. The Hellman’s vegan Mayo is a good substitute. Regular Flora is also vegan.
You can get good vegan “Parmesan” in a big tub in health food and organic shops (we get it in Real Foods in Edinburgh).

Koko cheese is the best vegan option that I've tried. Natutli vegan spread is also just like butter and is excellent. Just don't leave it out of the fridge. You can get it in Waitrose.

Hi
I've never found a good vegan cheese but Hellmans vegan mayo is delicious.

Nannytopsy Sun 27-Mar-22 10:56:05

I’m afraid vegan cheese is generally vile but ooni sell one my DiL will eat.

Violife cheese is about the best I've tried but to be honest, no vegan cheeses come close to the real thing if you enjoy cheese. I've been happily vegetarian and egg free for about 25 years but cheese is the one thing that prevents me from being vegan.

Has anyone found vegan Baby bell in shops?

Hellsbells63 Sun 27-Mar-22 10:48:52

Marks Plant Kitchen cheese slices are excellent in sandwiches. For mayonnaise, I would recommend Heinz or Hellmans.

Amber1 Sun 27-Mar-22 10:45:53

Ive found these two be great of the hard cheeses. Philadelphia do a lovely vegan cream cream. Violife also do a nice cheese chocolate spread Cocospread. There is a Camembert on the market available in Asda and Tesco which is nice cooked in the oven.
For cooking Engevita Nutritional Yeast Flakes (deactivated yeast) is a go to for any recipe that requires a cheesy flavour.
If you want any other ideas please feel free to pm me.

I love Inspired Vegan honey mustard dressing. I always use it with my avocados. You can buy it in Asda. ( I am not vegan - or even vegetarian)

I love Hellmans mayo. I avoid usually but vegan cheese from artisan markets and usually with garlic/chillies added. I have found some vegan cheeses quite horrid. Apple wood smoked cheese is palatable, but we all have different tastes. I don't use meat substitutes opting more for mushrooms as I find them very versatile. I process them for use instead of minced meats, far tastier too. Vegan meals are not just a plate if veg but so much more and very tasty. Xxx

Marinated or smoked tofu are lovely

Riverwalk Thu 24-Mar-22 15:34:44

I'm not a vegan but I do eat tofu - the firm pressed type. It's a great substitute for halloumi cheese.

I cut a couple of thick slices, dip in soy sauce, coat in panko breadcrumbs/gram flour then pan-fry in olive oil until golden brown.

Also good to have are Yeast flakes which you can sprinkle on pasta etc to give a cheesy Parmesan flavour. They are also good for B12.

If possible I would leave some time after giving up dairy cheeses before trying vegan versions. A lot of people think they don't taste good, but I think that is mainly because they are directly comparing them to dairy ones. Whether it's true or not I don't know, but I've read that dairy cheeses are addictive, and so you need to have a break before trying vegan ones.

I love the Tesco version of halloumi; the Violife and the Sainsbury's versions of fetta; Applewood's smoked; Le Rond version of Camembert/Brie; Violife Epic Mature 'cheddar'.

I used to LOVE dairy butter and think that I would never find a vegan version that I liked; how wrong I was! Flora Plant Butter block and Naturli are so delicious.

I'm not that keen on bought mayo, so make my own with aquafaba (the liquid from a can of chickpeas or beans) used just as you would use an egg; very quick and easy and it tastes great. It makes great meringue too!

humptydumpty Thu 24-Mar-22 14:41:36

Just a word to the wise - I like VioLife cheese but was shocked when a nutritionist friend pointed out that it contains NO protein! so a good substitute for the taste but not the nutrients in dairy cheese.

vegansrock Thu 24-Mar-22 14:35:57

Hellman’s is available in most places and tastes fine.I like VitaLife non dairy spread and their cream spread which is like Philadelphia, they also do various cheese alternatives, the cheddar one is ok in a sandwich. Peanut and other nut butters are a good staple, buy the better quality ones with no palm oils Hummus is also good to have in the fridge , serve over a baked potato with a salad makes a quick meal. Magnum do vegan choc ices which are nice as a treat!

I have a Tesco Plant Chef vegan mayo.
Main ingredients are rapeseed oil, glucose-fructose syrup and modified potato starch.
My son was pleased with it and I like it too, he's vegan but I'm not.

MayBee70 Thu 24-Mar-22 14:02:04

I’ve bought Heinz but I think Hellmans was the one that was recommended. The Hellmans was in a smaller jar.

sharon103 Thu 24-Mar-22 14:01:32

My advice would be to go on the supermarket websites and read the reviews.
My son although not totally vegan likes V Bites from Morrisons and Tesco free from cheese slices, jalapeno and chilli and Violife cheese slices.
There's a huge range of vegan food in supermarkets.

Oopsadaisy1 Thu 24-Mar-22 13:51:36

espee Hellmans is supposed to be good, I think they use oil instead of eggs.

Esspee Thu 24-Mar-22 13:49:52

There is a vegan mayonnaise available which I sampled. Unfortunately I can’t remember the brand but suspect it was Hellmann’s.
To be honest I couldn’t imagine how they could make mayonnaise without eggs but it was superb, tasted exactly as expected of a mayonnaise.

MayBee70 Thu 24-Mar-22 13:46:49

I’ve just bought some vegan mayonnaise after someone on the radio who has mayonnaise with everything (and isn’t veggie or vegan) was raving about it. Haven’t tried it yet, though. I buy HUEL food sometimes when I don’t feel like cooking and want instant food that’s vegan and has a balance of vitamins and minerals. I’m not veggie or vegan but am trying to have vegan or veggie days.

Oopsadaisy1 Thu 24-Mar-22 13:43:18

Sorry forgot about the Mayo.
MsOops makes her own for him, but she doesn’t like it!
