Every so often, I get a craving for hotdogs with fried onions and mustard. When I eat them I'm always disappointed. The sausage is never as nice as I expected. Does anyone else have a food that lets them down? Needless to say, this is a bit lighthearted. Chocolate rarely lets me down. ?

Betty's Fat Rascals, the rest of the family adore them ,they look good and smell good but one mouthful is sufficient, the same for hot cross buns the smell is delicious one mouth full I've had enough and know I will be reaching for the Gaviscon.

I agree, re pizza Chestnut. There used to be a pizza restaurant in my home city which made gorgeous pizza, but it closed down many years ago. Most other pizza is bland and greasy. Same with cake, IMO.

Just to add, cakes often look amazing but it's the texture and flavour which count. No amount of clever decoration can make up for a dry, heavy or tasteless cake.

I have been very disappointed twice by pizza lately so is it me or are they really that awful. One was greasy and the other just boring. I may give pizza a miss.

As for cakes of all kinds, you really need a good cake baker making them! Shop bought cakes are nearly always tasteless, tea room cakes often the same. They need to be soft, moist and VERY flavoursome. Not many cakes meet those high standards so they are often a disappointment. You may have to eat 10 cakes to find one which is exquisite. ?

Coffee made from freshly toasted coffee beans smells gorgeous, but I can stand the taste. One more anti coffee.

Coffee never disappoints me - unless it's instant!

Instant coffee just isn't coffee for me. My DH happily drinks instant but I have just one cup of proper coffee every morning. I quite like the ritual too, start with the beans and warm my frothy milk.
The thing I expect to like is pork pie, but after the first couple of mouthfuls it's just too greasy and claggy.

I always eat the things I love, whereas I gave up drinking 20 years ago because I realised I only drank because my friends did and that I really didn't like it at all. I didn't get drunk all the time but even getting tipsy didn't do anything for me.

Red Velvet cake or cupcakes.
I always think that the idea is good and they look good, but always disappointed by the dryness and what I think is as a strange taste to both !

Interesting answers. I would agree with Kalu though.

I hate UK tomatoes, they need sunshine heat in Mediterranean temperatures to be really tasty. Those grown in commercial greenhouses are usually not in soil but in blocks and are fed water and nutrients. They have a white core and are pretty tasteless. Used to love tomatoes from the Channel Islands. When did they disappear?

Just treated us to a box of fondant fancies which we used to love but oh no so sweet now!!

Walnuts, I recently admitted to myself that I don't like them. My mother loved a Walnut Whip, I think I just liked what she was having. 58 years old before I realised.

Eat one perfect …. and then disappointment surely follows grin.

I don’t expect to find perfect New York cheesecake again.

Coffee (real, not instant) smells delicious, but the taste is always a disappointment.

3 things always smell better than they taste; coffee, frying bacon, and baking bread. I still like all three, but the smell is best.

Chocolate eclairs my mother keeps buying for me. Just air and little taste.

DellaandtgeDealer Wed 04-May-22 13:09:45

Usually Right
My MiL used to say the same, drink anyone’s coffee but only her own builders tea. I tend to agree, tea out is often a let down.

You really should try mnaking them with Maltese sausages... mmm. www.tal-forn.com/2013/06/zalzett-malti-maltese-sausage-2/

Love the smell of percolate coffee but can't drink it as it makes me nauseous. Can only drink instant coffee after a meal.
Found this out on my first time in Paris. Had tea on the third morning at breakfast and felt fine.

I love many local foods when I am abroad, pastel de natta, moussaka, paella, gelato etc. but the "authentic" versions served in uk restaurants never taste the same. Always a disappointment.

crazyH Wed 04-May-22 12:39:50

I wish I could like cheesecake, but I don’t.
Never liked chocolate cake either. The only cake I like is a Victoria sponge

I really wish I liked tarragon, I try new recipes which include it a couple of times a year as DH loves it, but no I am not a fan.

My next try is going to be a James Martin recipe, chicken & wild mushroom pie with a tarragon and Marsala wine cream sauce, wish me luck.

I bought some Scottish grown Strawberries this morning. I hope they taste good. I don't seem to have had a decent strawberry in years. I will let you know what I think later.

Dempie55 Wed 04-May-22 11:56:08

Agree about the bacon, it always smells so yummy, but once I get to it, it's either cremated or all white and flabby, or full of stringy, fatty bits that get stuck in my teeth.

The other thing I think I like but don't is Halloumi cheese. My daughter is forever offering me toasted Halloumi, which I always accept, but never enjoy, because it's like chewing the sole of a sneaker, and it kind of squeaks against my teeth, which I hate. (My teeth have a lot to answer for.....)

Newatthis Wed 04-May-22 11:55:21

anything made with chocolate (yuk! )except chocolate!!
