Use by Dates

I have been sitting in my larder this morning (it being the coolest place right now!) sorting through its contents. Finding the use by dates has been a nightmare : on the bottom/side/top of cap/top of label/bottom of label/inside the box. Talk about hunt the date….. Some are so tiny I’ve had to resort to a magnifying glass ?. Does anyone else have this problem? At least the end result is pleasing - everything in date order. I wonder how long it’ll last ?

I never look at dates. If the food looks right, smells right, then I try it out on OH. If he survives then I will eat it. ?

I m with you Espee never look at them total waste of food
I m perfectly able to decide if something is good or bad without a date

Same here. I have started writing the date on tins with marker pen. Fridge items I use the smell test. Pasta I use no matter how ancient.

Another one that does not look at the dates, I look at the food.

I have impaired eyesight so I can rarely see the dates- problem solved!

Lol, my OH gets all the out of date food to eat ???
I’m not trying to poison him honest - but I’m more risk averse than him!!

I have a memory of my mother scraping mould off jam or cheese and giving it to us to eat. Not the mould! I had a pain au chocolate for breakfast today which was a couple of days over and it was fine.

I wasn’t in the fridge sorting out fresh food. I was in the larder cupboard. The food is in cans and packets. The point of the exercise was to sort out the dates so the earliest dates would be used first and the later dates used , erm, later. ?

Things in cans can last for decades - I never bother with dates on any food item, canned, bottled, packet or fresh.
Managed to get through to 81 years that way, will continue.

This evening, with our tea we had a can of beer between us. It was lovely and refreshing. Dh then told me it was 2 years out of date. ?

I never eat anything past it’s use by date. Even if it looks okay you cannot smell the bugs that can cause food poisoning. To me it’s just not worth it.
