Still on the subject of not cooking do you ever have a take away ?

We just never have and probably never will as I worry about the quality of the food and the salt and sugar in the meals and grudge the prices charged . I see so many young couples on TV programmes about reducing the cost of food who have them several times a week . The only ones we ever had was 45 years ago when we lived in the north of Scotland and a lovely Indian man made curries in his home and delivered them to be reheated. We used to order a mild and a medium and mix them but my DBIL lived with us for a while and he always had a hot one. The chap delivering them ( also the maker of the curries ) asked me one day who ate these hot curries. I told him and he replied that he wished he could eat them himself but they were too hot.

We have them about once a week, occasionally fish and chips, but more than likely a Chinese or Indian. Love a peshwari nan smothered in honey. Could just eat one now ??

Goodness me - people who don’t have takeaways - I must live on another planet. I hate cooking - mainly because I work at home (self employed) and at 76 with health issues, am often too tired to cook - if I do it’s often ‘cheat cooking’ - simplest ingredients prepared with the littlest time.
I have a takeaway quite regularly and due to the pandemic the choices have increased a lot over the last 2+ years I’ve been isolated/near isolated.
Tonight I will have a plain meal of Scampi , chips and peas with real Lemon, and tartare sauce - via Harvesters, Yum!

I don't like eating out much, prefer to eat in the comfort and privacy of my own home, so we have a takeaway delivered about once a week. We only live in a small town but have lots of choice-Indian, Thai, Chinese, Nepalese, Turkish, Italian and good old chip shop fare. Also a pub that does lovely Sunday roasts-works out not much dearer than buying it all and faffing about for hours just for two of us. All the ones we've tried have been very good and the prices cheaper than their eat in menu

Never. I don’t like eating out either.

We live in a small town which has a burger/chicken/pizza place, a Chinese, Fish and chip shop and an Indian. All are 5 star hygiene graded. I'm not allowed to cook for health reasons, so my husband, a retired chef cooks 7 days a week. Whenever he seems down or fed up, I suggest a take-away. Sometimes he says yes, others no, but it cheers him up if I just suggest it. All are quite good, but we don't use the Indian, it is far too expensive. When in Gloucestershire an Indian was £13 for a starter and main, here a main course is £15. Too expensive to be practical.

Near dd’s house in Oxford on Saturdays there’s often a stall with authentic Cyprus-style kebabs* in pitta bread with salad. I can always fancy one of those! We’re not often there on a Saturday, though.

*Souvlakia type, not doner kebab, which I never fancied even before a Greek Cypriot friend told us how a local one (in N London) was dismantled for cleaning - the centre was alive with maggots! ?

Hardly ever. Fish and chips in our village are horrible and neither Indian nor Chinese deliver

Fronkydonky Tue 26-Jul-22 13:30:19

We do order Thai or Indian takeaway now and again as we have some exceptionally good takeaway/restaurants where I live. I never order Nando’s or burgers to be delivered, a) because they never arrive hot and b) I’m not that fussed on burgers. Usually we order Indian or Thai food for a treat to celebrate someone’s birthday in the family, and eat together.

StoneofDestiny Tue 26-Jul-22 13:20:12

Only during the pandemic when our local pub did takeaway meals and drinks. Never had a takeaway’ meal otherwise.

I can't remember the last time I had Fish and chips from the shop. Definitely before lockdown. I don't ever have other takeaways.

Grantanow Tue 26-Jul-22 13:07:13

Very occasionally fish and chips and we sometimes buy a curry meal and sides from Waitrose. When we had our kitchen remodelled we ordered in a batch of ready meals online which was convenient but no more than that. We occasionally order a meal from Cote but that's a real treat.

Apart from the odd fish and chip shop tea we’d never had takeaways as a family but we’d always celebrated birthdays with meals out. I now live alone but during the pandemic my bubble (eldest son family) celebrated birthdays with takeaways and joined in my youngest son’s birthday with a remote takeaway. That’s all ended now and I’m back to not having, or missing, takeaways. I can make quick, more nutritious and a lot cheaper meals. It does annoy me when people complain about the cost of living but still have expensive regular takeaways

Every Friday night we have an Indian takeaway. I really look forward to it, the best thing is I don’t have to think about what to cook for dinner.

Liz62 Tue 26-Jul-22 12:42:48

Yes Friday night is take away night & it varies, Chinese,Indian, fish and chips or pizza , its a good way to start the weekend ? ?

grandtanteJE65 Tue 26-Jul-22 12:28:55

We no longer have takeaways when we are at home in Denmark, as they are just far too expensive. We can cook for nearly a week for the two of us for the price of a takeaway for two!

Travelling in Germany, the Netherlands, Poland or Spain we do sometimes eat takeaway, as they are affordable in other countries and 11 years ago (last time we were in Scotland) fish and chips was affordable too. Probably isn't any more.

Startingover61 Tue 26-Jul-22 11:56:42

Very rarely. Fish and chips once a year maybe, and a pizza perhaps a couple of times a year.

annifrance Tue 26-Jul-22 11:56:04

When we lived in England we had a very good Indian and a very good Chinese takeaways. I really miss the occasional one. Here in France Profonde takeaways were unknown before Covid. During then some restaurants started them and now there are a few takeaways.

We have just discovered a fabulous kebab kiosk, and will probably indulge in a takeaway from them now and again.

In summer the next village has a night market every Wednesday which is mainly food outlets, and very good they are too. English Fish and Chips, good wines, good pression and last week the most to die for Moules Frites. We can eat at long tables provided by the Mairie or sit on the beach by the lake. What's not to like!

grannyrebel7 Tue 26-Jul-22 11:54:30

Last time we had fish & chips it was a staggering £16! Couldn't believe it, fish & chips used to be a cheap option. Often have a take away Indian, but not keen on Chinese so much.

Happysexagenarian Tue 26-Jul-22 11:44:24

Only Fish and Chips very occasionally from our mobile chippy. It's absolutely delicious and so fresh. I'd like to have it more often but it has got very expensive now.

We don't eat any other takeaway foods, don't really like them. Our AC eat takeaways frequently, I don't know how they afford them. The pizzas are huge and half of it gets thrown away.

Gabrielle56 Tue 26-Jul-22 11:43:20

We find that so named restaurant meals actually taste very much less pleasing than wot I cook! I'm terrible at quipping how I can make it better and for a fraction of the price! I resent food presented in a way that seems as if they're trying to emulate that clanger of a programme MasterChef! Full of drizzled this and jus that, with you pudding splattered around a dustbin sized plate as if there's been a major accident in kitchen and my pud is the victim! I appreciate well prepared food with the eater in mind, I don't mind a hefty bill if it's deserved but hate being suckered!

GrammaH Tue 26-Jul-22 11:42:46

No, we don't have takeaways at the moment. We live in the middle of the Shropshire countryside & nobody delivers to us. When we were farming our land ourselves, I always used to envy those who could have a takeaway brought at the end of a long working day in the fields or with the cows. We did have some home cooked ones during lockdown, cooked & brought round by a local caterer who would've normally doing weddings, 21sts and the like. They were brilliant & helped to keep her going through difficult times. She's now rushed off her feet with event catering again. I must say I do love a good Chinese takeaway, we occasionally join DS & DIL for one as they're nearer civilisation than we are!

knspol Tue 26-Jul-22 11:40:16

Would love to try one but live too far out of town for a delivery, like the idea of just dialing for a pizza and it turning up on the doorstep, no oven time involved!

Gabrielle56 Tue 26-Jul-22 11:36:28

Mamardoit

We used to have a fantastic Chinese take away in the village but the people retired and sold the business. It's still a take away but not nearly as good as before. The fish and chips locally are poor too so it's a real treat when we are away and find a good chippy.

In the summer the local cricket club do a good BBQ and have the occasional food night. DH enjoys the guess beers too.

Yer want to move Oop north, come home to chippy country......

Gabrielle56 Tue 26-Jul-22 11:33:26

I'd say maybe one every 5 or 6 weeks on average we can go months without then maybe have one 2 weeks apart, depends if I get fed up of creating meals at home! Saw n eat well for less programme yesterday and was staggered that an average family young couple with 2 kids spent £230 a month on takeaways!!!!! I wonder how much these people earn?!? Plus why aren't they all weighing 20 stones!!? Apparently the Young's chomp away 2-4 times/week on takeaways of one sort or other! Revolting.....
