Sweating Onions

If they are starting to turn brown, they are caramelising and starting to cook.

Cover the pan and add a little salt. You won't need very much oil either but always make sure the onions are finely chopped - it's a faff I know but well worth it. Happy cooking!

Many recipes call for an onion to be chopped and 'sweated' in oil until translucent. How do you achieve this?
I have a ceramic hob, and with the heat set at 1, they are still uncooked after 20 mins but are starting to turn brown.
What am I doing wrong?
Is it me, the hob, the pan or what?
