Iceberg Lettuce - is it me?

No, you are not imagining it. My husband loves iceberg lettuce and I used to hate it, much preferring mixed leaves that I grew myself. However, having had a lot of dental problems and needing a denture I find the leaves get stuck in my mouth and I can't chew them! So, I've learned to love iceberg, leaves in icy water then mixed with some red onion and red chicory. They are definitely smaller, nowhere near as dense and sometimes I have to throw the middle away as it is rock hard. How I long for a French or Spanish vegetable market with wonderful greenery and knobbly tomatoes that have texture and flavour.

It is the weather, romaine and little gem lettuces have been the same this summer. They produce less leaves and bolt sooner when it’s hot. Normal service will no doubt be resumed when it cools down and rains more.

No you're not imagining it. Maybe something to do with the very dry summer.

I grow my own salad leaves so can't say I've noticed.

No they are definitely shrinking, we are in Mallorca at the moment and over here they are still big, for the same cost as they are at home.

No, you're not imagining it, I have noticed it too. However, I don't buy iceberg that often as I find it tasteless although MrP would have it every time - a throwback from his previous life seemingly. Much prefer something with a bit more flavour like lambs lettuce, romaine, little gem as well as rocket.

I remember when iceberg lettuces were almost the size of a football and densely packed with leaves so you needed a sharp knife to cut them.

Nowadays the ones I buy are small, saggy and almost seem to be filled with air - I used to buy 1 lettuce a fortnight and now it is 2 a week!

My daughter just laughs and says I must be imagining it - am I?
