Cornflour disappearing from supermarket shelves?

From latest news in the DT

Used to do everything from thickening Sunday roast gravies to making shortbread biscuits light and crumbly, cornflour was, and is, a necessity for most home cooks.
But now there are fears it could disappear from supermarket shelves forever after Tesco announced it was no longer selling the product as a result of “low customer demand
The revelation came after one unhappy customer posted on Twitter asking the company why it was no longer stocking cornflour
A spokesman for Tesco responded by saying: “Cornflour has been discontinued because of low customer demand I'm afraid “.”
This prompted outrage on the internet forum for parents, Mumsnet, with users saying that although they often didn’t buy the product more than once every six months, it was still an essential part of their food cupboard

Quick check kitchen cupboards-yes, got one! .

I've bought cornflour recently in Lidl.

I used some at the weekend and was just thinking I should really get another box. I use it for various things, including 'velvetising' meat for Chinese cooking.

I've added 2 boxes to my Sainsbury's order as I use quite a lot.

I’ve done exactly the same🙂.

I reckon (must look) that if I go onto the Dove site, they will sell it there.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 16-Nov-22 08:35:32

Well, they do sell it but only in little tubs of 110gms.

Mind you, if it becomes a desired product it would probably mean that they sell it in larger quantities.

I use flour for thickening, although I have cornflour in my cupboard, I don't use it that often, for meringue I think. I notice a lot of American recipes include corn starch which I presume is the same. When my granddaughter comes to stay as she is gluten intolerant, I've found the gluten free flour works just as well as a thickening agent.

Big article in The Telegraph saying there is a shortage, but not why, so now there really will be as we all stockpile. Makes a change from toilet rolls grin

I use cornflour at least twice a week. My current box from Tesco's is over half empty. I must ask DH to buy some more when he's next out shopping. He works part time in the Co-op and they haven't sold cornflour for ages.

I got the only packet left on the shelf last week its not being being restocked I was told. Arrowroot tapioca semolina boudoir biscuits just a few things I use that are not on our local shops shelves anymore.
I asked in Sainsbury's last week for pudding rice and was told no demand for it. I was then directed to shelves were tinned pudding is stocked. To say I wasn’t impressed is putting it mildly.
If you don’t cook or bake you are laughing ready made food is available everywhere. It’s ok if that’s what you want and I am sure it’s convenient but it’s not for me and never has been.

I've never knowingly bought cornflour hmm

I'm just editing tomorrow's Ocado order and they seem to have plenty - M&S 250g for 80p, maybe I'll order loads and sell on the black market! grin

Shelflife Wed 16-Nov-22 09:30:30

Heck! Will check my pantry cupboard. Have always used it for many of the reasons already mentioned.

Just remember, whatever you can't find in the shops..........you can ALWAYS find it on Amazon. Yes, they have plenty of cornflour.

Ready made food isn't the only alternative to food thickened with cornflour. I hardly ever buy ready made foods, but I can't think of any times when I would use cornflour either.

I found this out recently when my daughter in law wanted some. She does a lot of baking and uses a lot of corn flour. No where round here had any.

They finally managed to find some in Morrisons. I have no idea why there is such a shortage of something like this.

Riverwalk Wed 16-Nov-22 09:51:10

For those who need GF flour for thickening etc, gram flour (chickpea) is GF.

Callistemon21 Wed 16-Nov-22 10:14:15

The thing with cornflour is that it never seems to go in lumps, even if the stock is warm.

I've used alternatives, gf and non gf, but always go (went) back to it.

Stores will blame the customer!

I remember years ago asking in a supermarket (Tesco I think) for a fairly routine item and was told they didn't stock it any more because there was 'no demand'.

The assistant then said 'We're always being asked where it is'
I said 'So there is a demand for it then?'
🤔

Thanks MawtheMerrier. Heading out for a small shop so will stock up. Use it for shortbread, pavlovas and thickening gravy. I have worries about Burdalls Gravy Salt which I use alongside cornflour when doing "mince and tatties" for the family as I struggled to find it in the past. It lasts forever but I wouldn't like to be without it. Used gravy granules one time and it did not go down well!!

LOL, yes a natural reaction. Will probably not help with the shortage though ;)

It's gf FP so a medical requirement!

That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!! I suspect it is Wwm2 excuse too.

CraftyGranny Wed 16-Nov-22 15:38:23

I was out with my sister earlier and she told me that Tesco are stopping selling cornflour because of the lack of demand!

I wonder if this is the general feeling with other supermarkets, rather than a shortage.

CraftyGranny Wed 16-Nov-22 15:42:32

Whoops, didn't read the OP properly. blush

Alioop Wed 16-Nov-22 18:25:48

I get mine in Home Bargains when I'm making shortbread.

AreWeThereYet Wed 16-Nov-22 18:33:19

I use arrowroot for thickening instead of cornflour.
