Tomato free receipes?
(46 Posts)Recently found out that Im allergic to tomato and this has made it very hard for me to cook anything because I have always cooked from scratch and used tinned tomatoes as a base for many meals such as chilli, curry and bolognese.
Does anyone have any good ideas how I can still make these taste convincing without tomato? (Also without it taking a really long time to prep things.) I tried butternut squash and beetroot concoction but none of us liked it.

Whynot make a drink of your choice and relax in front of your computer for a while googling curry recipes, tomatoless?, or of that doesn't work, just sift through them and concentrate on those made without tomatoes. I cook a lot of curries with aubergine, where tomatoes can easily be replaced by peppers, corgettes and similar.
Yes but I have already explained that I am avoiding The Nightshade family.
So far the only ones I can find contain coconut milk, which is ok but I need to go shopping for the Tamarind paste.
Bunty , if you’re ok with tomatoes, try passata, it’s very useful and more substantial than tomato purée (obvs not ok for Onward&Upward though).
Lathyrus, I find Marigold bouillon powder very salty although the low salt version is better, but harder to find.

I use a similar product, works well.
Soy sauce, maggi, miso add umami flavour.
Just don't use tomato in curry, many curry have no tinned tomatoes - substitute another veg or leave out.

I too have arthritis and avoid tomatoes and grapefruit. The problem is that nowadays people have more complex meals rather than meat and two veg.
My pain is so bad from osteoarthritis which is due to wear and tear and there is no collagen between the bones. I do avoid tomatos, oranges and grapefruit but eat a lot of oily fish.
Baked beans are in tomato sauce so I don’t eat those.
Sorry to hear that. Oily fish is good!
I have never liked baked beans, so not a problem to avoid those.

To create a tomato sauce substitute from eggplant, first, saute or roast it, and then remove the skin. Add olive oil and your preferred spices and herbs and then blend into a puree, adding water to reach a sauce consistency. You can also use store-bought ajvar, which is a red bell pepper and eggplant spread, as a tomato sauce substitute.
Thanks, but I'm avoiding The Nightshade Family. It includes Peppers and Aubergines as well as tomatoes.

I love the idea of Nomato sauce but the ingredients include peppers, so I cant have it.
But here are the ingredients:
Ingredients: Water, Sweet Potato, Carrots, Red Peppers, Beetroot Olive Oil, Balsamic Vinegar, Red Grape Vinegar, Cooked Grape Must, Concentrated Lemon Juice, Sea Salt, Oregano, Black Pepper

Just to be clear, I can't tolerate tinned or fresh of tomato and won't be eating aubergine/eggplant or peppers either because they are also in the Nightshade family. I don't think I'm great with potatoes but haven't given them up, just cut down.
I have not tried tomato paste yet, but seem to be ok with small amounts of ketchup...Lots of good ideas, thanks!
A tin of mushy peas makes a great base for a curry.
I'm allergic to tomatoes (starts with itchy hands then lips before my month starts to swell by which time my whole body has developed urticaria), I can't eat fresh or tinned, cooked or raw, little bits hidden in meals, etc.
I can eat tomato paste / puree (not juice, soup etc ), with paste I will get the trots but not ill, and Heinz ketchup and baked beans. I use these to replace the tomatoes usually used in recipes

Time after their introduction, and then when used only seasonal or preserved by those who had garden and kitchen to bottle them, and also pre tomato introduction medieval cookery, not suggesting that you make historic recipes but maybe look at them to see what flavorings they use
Tamarind has been mentioned, tamarind is in things like worcestershire sauce, Hendersons and Yorkshire relish, if you're doing a cheese sauce, some of this plus some mustard powder really brings out the flavor of the sauce. Nutritional yeast is good. as is pesto Too.

If you're intolerant rather than severely allergic it could be that this is only with fresh tomatoes rather than cooked/canned.
I'd check with whoever tested you if this could be the case.
Yes, I am always upset by fresh tomatoes, but if they are cooked they agree with me perfectly well. I think this is true of a variety if foods, provided that there is only intolerance and not severe allergy.
I find using plenty of fresh garlic gives a lovely tang to chilli, curry etc. Balsamic vinegar is worth a try too.
If you cannot have tinned tomatoes, whizz up some fresh ones with a little water in the food processor, peels, seeds, and all. The mixture will be a weird pink, but when you heat it, it turns red.
Have you tried various Miso? Maggi?

Have you tried Tamarind paste?

Interesting about tomatoes being from the nightshade family. So are potatoes - do those affect the tomato-sufferers too? Just interested!
I am afraid neither spaghetti bolonese, or any other Italian recipe as a lot of them do use tomatoes will taste right without them, and I am uncertain about chili con carne, but you can make really good curries without tomatoes.
Do you have a good Indian cookery book? Not one toned down to European taste? I have tons of Indians recipes that don't use tomatoes, so I know you can find them.
You can also experiment by just leaving out the tomatoes or tomato paste, perhaps use fresh red peppers instead or a little more ginger than the original recipe.
i have ulcerative colitis so can't eat tomatoes because of the seeds I think so I use Pessato when cooking as it is pure tomatoes without the seeds
