Is it safe to use uncooked gammon which has been in the post since Sunday

I’ve just written a damning report on Trust Pilot about DPD as have lots of others. Once the parcel isn’t delivered and gets taken back to depot you can say goodbye to it. Having said that if a certain driver is on I know there will be no problems.

I’ve had problems with DPD too, not food, it’s not a Christmas item so I will wait till New year to see if it actually arrives.

Thank goodness!

I was going to ask "Is it there yet?"

A replacement gammon arrived safely this morning. I’ve been refunded the rest and sent a bottle of red wine and 6 bottles of cider foc as a goodwill gesture. Plus I had a very apologetic telephone call last night. Pity about the Perry but they have done all they can. I am told the previous parcel will be destroyed by DPD. What a waste! I’d rather they drank it than smash it.

Do hope all works out well. Let us know what happens.

Finally heard from the farm at lunchtime. They told me the gammon would be off even if it did arrive. The good news is they will send what replacements they have to arrive tomorrow with a refund for anything out of stock. The bad news is the carrier is DPD 😂😂😂

Sadly, I wouldn’t be surprised if you soon get a message from DPD saying that unfortunately the parcel is “lost”. I think you should contact the farm in the morning if nothing arrives by end of play today, rather than DPD.
Similar happened to me last year with DPD who were supposed to deliver a M&S hamper to my sister. It never arrived. I contacted M&S rather than bother with DPD, and they reimbursed me.

I will Riverwalk except there’s 12 bottles of Somerset Perry in the parcel as well which won’t go off and I’d rather like to have. 🙂

Grandmafrench This would have been another complication for Phoenix to add to the curse grin My gammon is only a small one this year so no problem with pans and lids this time!

Riverwalk Thu 22-Dec-22 11:32:14

I would now cancel the order and get your money back.

Dd has got me one from M&S 🙂 DPD website says there is a delay. It is in our warehouse! I see they delivered a load of car parts instead of Christmas presents from her family for one lady on her own the other side of Bristol. Poor lady.

Grandmafrench Wed 21-Dec-22 19:05:55

I too hope it arrives. It would be a shame not to be able to curse it, in true Phoenix tradition! 🤬

This thread has sent me on a trip down memory lane to my childhood. My maternal grandparents in rural Ireland used to send us a fresh turkey in the post. Grandpa would do the deed, Gran would pluck it and send it on its way as parcel post on the boat. Wrapped in brown paper and tied up with string and red sealing wax on the knots. Goodness knows how many days it was in transit. Amazingly we were never sick after eating it.

I hope your gammon arrives 25Avalon.

It still hasn’t come and DPD haven’t updated the website. I have bad vibes so think I’d better see if dd can get one in M&S tomorrow. Rather have 2 than none at all. So annoying when I ordered weeks ago but c’est la vie.

It will be fine as the others have said .

Have wee dram before eating if you're worried - we call it Dettol for the tummy !

Farmor15 Wed 21-Dec-22 15:42:52

It's also presumably vacuum packed. If it started off frozen, even if kept above fridge temperature for a few days, it will still be fine. It's going to be cooked anyway.

Baggs Wed 21-Dec-22 14:47:20

Well packed usually means with insulation where meat is concerned. If it feels cold when you unpack it, it'll be fine.

25Avalon Wed 21-Dec-22 14:35:01

What worries me is although it was frozen on despatch it has been in a DVD van for 24 hours and now nearly 2 days in their warehouse which I doubt is below 5C, and temperatures here have been much higher.

Riverwalk Wed 21-Dec-22 14:05:30

Yes, it will be fine - gammon is cured in salt so doesn't go off too quickly, plus it will have hardly been sitting around in high temperatures!

25Avalon Wed 21-Dec-22 14:02:37

Thanks Sodapop I’ll do that - if it ever arrives ☹️

sodapop Wed 21-Dec-22 13:28:57

My chef husband says it will be fine 25Avalon rinse it before cooking and cook thoroughly. Bon appetit.

I have a Cooks Christmas dinner and ordered a free range unsmoked gammon joint a month ago for Boxing Day to be delivered on Monday. The farm despatched it via DPD on Sunday evening. DPD gave me a delivery time for Monday afternoon but it did not come and on Tuesday was showing as being in their depot. I rang the farm who said the gammon was frozen and well packed for 3 days. Today it is still showing as being at the depot but due for delivery today and a one hour time slot will be sent but it hasn’t. I can’t get through to the farm. If it does arrive today do you think it will be OK to use?

Otherwise does anyone know where I can get one? Dd is picking up her turkey from M&S tomorrow. Do you think there will be some on the shelves she can get me?

Dh is happy with a tin of spam from my store cupboard but I’m not!
