Hello

I’d really like to cut down on cow’s milk.
I hardly drink any as it is, but always have some in the fridge.

What are your favourites?

It’s just to go in tea and coffee, and also to make porridge with.
I can envisage that it’s most tricky to find one that tastes good in tea…

Advice please!
Thank you 😊

There is a theory that Asian men’s genetic make up is stronger against testosterone. Hair loss can be testosterone linked

Oatly Barista. I do not have dairy at all. I’ve tried them all and Oatly Barista in tbe grey carton beats all the others hands down. I used it in tea, coffee, porridge and all recipes that require milk. If you prefer a less creamy version, they are available too. I don’t miss milk nor other dairy products at all.

Romola, good points, thanks. Will bear that information in mind.

Lizzypopbottle , you are correct in your observation of the current coffee culture. Some fancy coffees have 17 teaspoons of sugar in them. It’s all the syrup’s the cafes add . It nice to be able to pick what milk suits . A desert dressing as a coffee is not me.

Rainsnow Do you know if there's any connection between Asian men, lack of body hair and soya consumption? Your post set me wondering...

Dairy has only been around for 150 years in Japan . So 90 percent of the population are lactose intolerance. The ports introduced dairy.

lizzypopbottle Mon 01-May-23 12:13:55

Dairy intolerance and vegetarianism/veganism acknowledged! I prefer own brand soya milk. As well as being considerably cheaper, I can tell the difference between own brand and Alpro, which definitely has a strong flavour. And, as I said, I don't want my coffee to taste of oats or soya. I think many people dislike coffee but it's fashionable to drink it. That has to be why they add sugar, chocolate or flavoured syrups and make oat, or other faux milk lattes. I don't care for black coffee so a small amount of bland cow's milk suits me.

Phytoestrogens are in soy at a much lower level than we would produce naturally. The presence of them in the diet helps with hot sweats and lots of other menopause symptoms. If you have a hrt patch and then stop using it you go back to start of symptoms again. If you are able to eat soya you can get some relief in a natural form. Lots of studies on men and soya , arguments for both. Japanese and Chinese men eat it lots.

I use oat milk. I also use oat milk barista in coffee. It takes a while to get used to. I've found that most tea and coffee shops have it now.

I’m vegetarian Fanny and like you would love to go all the way and be vegan, but I lack the willpower. 😕

Mollygo Mon 01-May-23 11:53:16

Rainnsnow.
I never knew that about non-dairy cultures being able to smell it. Perhaps it’s like being able to smell whether a baby have been breastfed or not.
With regard to the menopause, I’m really glad I didn’t eat tofu. Starting at was quite late enough.

Katcoffee Mon 01-May-23 11:51:13

Being lactose intolerant for years, I use Alpro soya as my favourite and it froths nicely in my milk frother to make cappuccino. I do have oat and almond but soya is my absolute favourite.

Rainnsnow Mon 01-May-23 11:49:44

Some cultures don’t have dairy and can smell it on people who do. Also they don’t have a word for menopause as the tofu they eat keeps their oestrogen levels high for longer. The coeliac article mentions cross contamination in oats . I can’t have de glutenized oats due to severe gut damage. I have cornmeal instead.

Summerfly no, it’s not too late!
Thanks to everyone for your ongoing replies.

Lizzy I’ve been vegetarian/ pescatarian for over 40 years.
I’d love to be vegan but I haven’t the willpower and I’m in thrall to cheese.
But I do want to cut down on dairy as much as I can because I don’t want to consume so many animal products.
It doesn’t have to be all or nothing in my book

Apparently humans are the only animals that drink milk after weaning. I stopped milk in tea when I couldn't find a decent substitute and have Oatly in everything else.

Rainnsnow Mon 01-May-23 11:29:53

Lizzypopbottle, dairy is fine if you can have it . I cant, I’m allergic. It’s good we have the choice now. The younger ones love oat milk as it makes a great latte. I have a naughty soya latte as the froth is lovely. We still have a milkman for the dairy in glass bottles .

After years of searching for non dairy milk that didn't taste like cardboard, I've settled on Alpro Oat No Sugars Long Life Drink as it's great in hot drinks as well as for cereal. I was enjoying Oatly Barista which is creamier so lovely in coffee, but it contains more sugar, which is a no-no since I became diabetic.

red1 Mon 01-May-23 11:25:30

goats milk, all the non dairy fall short in my opinion.i make oat milk for smoothies and blend with milk, penny pinching!

Moggycuddler Mon 01-May-23 11:22:33

I've tried them all, pretty much. For years. Always go back to Alpro original soya milk. It tastes great if you make coffee with milk too, or in porridge, or just on its own.

lizzypopbottle Mon 01-May-23 11:20:49

I drink redbush tea with soya milk (milk in first or I've found it splits) and oat milk for porridge and smoothies (I put oats in my smoothies.) A double cholesterol lowering hit!

But what's wrong with cow's milk? I use it (semi-skimmed) on fruit-and-fibre breakfast cereal and a small splash in coffee. The great thing about it is it doesn't have a discernible flavour. I don't want my coffee to taste of oats! I also use cow's milk for custard and cheese sauce.

Rainnsnow Mon 01-May-23 11:19:43

Dug is my favourite plant milk, it’s made from potatoes. Tastes creamy and colours the tea . I try not to have much soya as it’s not good with thyroid problems. I can’t have oat as it contains gluten. I’m aware they are an ultra processed food but the non organic ones are fortified so helpful as a way to a small amount of vitamins.Almond milk can make tea taste stewed. It’s nice to go into a local health food shop and see what they have to offer, they can also tell you their favourite . I have made organic milks with mixed nuts blended in a nutri bullet . I soak them overnight in water . Wizz in bullet and strain in a muslin cloth. The milk is wonderful. The nuts left can make bliss balls . Add softened dates , nut butter and roll. Box in fridge, great energy boost.

Greyduster Mon 01-May-23 11:19:09

I like oat milk as a stand-alone drink and would put it on cereal and in porridge, but it makes coffee taste horrible. I don’t drink tea with any kind of milk in it.

dogsmother Mon 01-May-23 11:15:56

Oat milk for coffee and tea don’t laugh but marvel….

Froglady Mon 01-May-23 11:15:11

I use Arla lactose free semi skilled milk all the time. It tastes good in tea and coffee. I tend to buy the long life cartons as it means I can take them on holiday and not have to worry about being able to buy it when I'm away from home. I've used Arla for several years now and wouldn't change to anything else now - it suits me.
