When I retired I had never baked in my life but it has become a favourite hobby and I try to bake a different cake each week, learning from my mistakes. My favourite cake is definitely a Victoria sponge. What is yours and do you have any baking anecdotes?

Battenberg if bought
Carrot Cake if home made
Or my Dads Chocolate Cake but he died many years ago.

Made a chocolate type Victoria sponge today but my favourite to make and eat is Coffee and Walnut.

A lightly spiced Carrot cake, moist with plump sultanas and topped with American frosting.

A version of Sachertorte from an ancient Good Housekeeping booklet.
The first time I made it, probably 50 years ago, our weekend guests announced that they were not going home until they'd had another slice. I made it for the coronation the other day and it still hit the spot with our neighbours.

Lemon drizzle cake I made one for my daughter-in-law’s birthday on Tuesday as she loves it too.

Just made a Victoria sandwich, it’s cooling on tray now. Got raspberry preserve and made some butter cream to fill it. Yum 😋

Victoria sponge, always.

My favourites are lemon sponge sandwich cake or orange & poppyseed cake which I first tried in Australia. I make a lot of my friends and family a cake for their birthday and their favourite is mainly coffee & walnut sandwich cake. I cannot stand chocolate cake.

Bara brith but never divulge the recipe

DH loves a chocolate cake so I make Prue Leith's chocolate fudge cake most weeks. However, I love a coffee cake so I occasionally make one with a deliciously rich filling, it's very moreish so I don't do it very often as I can't leave it alone!

I have my nana's recipe books and like a polish cake recipe. I tend to get asked to make the date and walnut loaf from a 1950s trex book. In fact have one in the oven at the moment. My husband likes the Victoria jam sponge. And I bake the guy who gives him a lift to work, He requests a preference for chocolate cake. Myself probably easier to say which I don't like. Did like a lot a courgette cake I made with an internet recipe for courgette and lime cake. If you Google you will probably see. As well as a redcurrant yoghurt cake.

Lemon Drizzle….when I used to make it for my work colleagues it went down a storm!!

Dunnet Sat 03-Jun-23 15:43:45

In the autumn, my grandmother's old fashioned Yorkshire parkin made with treacle and oatmeal.

Otherwise, any of those light layered German Torten or cream cakes along the lines of a Black Forest Gateau.

Scandinavian Princess Torte, a light layered cream cake covered in a thin layer of marzipan is rather good.

Nearer home, lemon drizzle or coffee and walnut are very acceptable.

Nigella’s clementine cake.

I love most cakes but my favourites are Mary Berry’s whole lemon cake, a luxurious step up from lemon drizzle. I also like my own invention of cherry bakewell tart made with maraschino cocktail cherries. Love any rich fruit cake and adore orange peel and almond cake, I need to find a recipe for this one so I can make it.

Date, banana and walnut cake made by me to my own gradually evolved recipe.

Also my own 'interpretation' (i.e. not vegan) of an Easy Vegan Carrot Cake.

Also Red Velvet Cake made with proper beetroot and milk chocolate cooking chocolate rather than dark.

And apple and honey cake.

I love a chocolate cake with cream and real chocolate on top that is what my mum used to bake every Sunday. I also did it for my sons. But I do a nut and pear cake with a chocolate sponge. My sons favourite. If you look on be-ro they have some great recipes and if you send them a stamp address envelope and I think it was £1 probably bit more now they will send you a recipe book

Christmas cake or Lemon Polenta cake - a Nigella gluten free recipe.

SachaMac Sat 03-Jun-23 14:19:45

Victoria sponge with raspberry jam or lemon curd and fresh cream is my favourite but I also get tempted by the coffee & walnut cake in coffee shops.

Moonwatcher1904 Sat 03-Jun-23 14:16:26

I love Christmas cake but after making several for relatives one year and getting not much response I stopped doing it. I still love fruit cake and my DH loves my Madeira cake. I made some simple buns with icing and coloured bits which he also loves.

I love making pistachio cake
The green paste comes from France & it uses lots of butter in the recipe
But it’s moist & delicious
I make it for visitors
Otherwise Anzac biscuits are usually on standby smile

polly123 Sat 03-Jun-23 14:10:15

Lemon drizzle, a good fruit cake, coffee and walnut....love cake.

NanaDana Sat 03-Jun-23 14:02:06

Rich fruit cake for me please, ideally with a piece of cheese on the side. Wensleydale will do nicely. Yes, you've guessed it.. I'm a Yorkshire lass by birth.

Grandmabatty Sat 03-Jun-23 13:55:42

Freya it's so chocolatey!! Sadly I am diabetic so the chocolate cake rarely is made now

Ktsmum Sat 03-Jun-23 13:48:08

Dame Mary Berry's lemon drizzle, never fails, always delicious😋😋
