I’ve just had an operation (all is fine) but I have been fancying rice pudding and fish pie.
For me real comfort food especially rice pudding.

What do others turn to?

I think we should have a National Comfort Food day when we all eat our favourite. grin

Katyj

henetha. You’ve just reminded me about bread and milk, my grandad used to call them pogs he was from Yorkshire. My mum makes cheese and onion in milk and loves it.

My relations made bread, hot milk and sugar and mashed it up for babies they called it pobs. They were from Cumberland.
My own favourite when not well is white toasted bread with butter and raspberry jam or strawberry.

I've now got an overwhelming desire to eat a big bowlful .
It's scrumptious.......off to the kitchen.

I still enjoy bread and milk now and then. I'm glad that others remember it. I don't know it's origin. I'm Devonshire, but it was probably popular all over the place. Especially with poorer people.

I used to visit my childhood friend before she died three years ago. We would talk about our childhood experiences, she was the eldest of six and she said if her Mum ran out of money towards the end of the week they would have to live on bread and milk. This was in Worcestershire.

Buttered toast with real butter and thick sliced bread. I am reminded of the toast we used to make over the fire with a roasting fork when I was a child, it was delicious. Sometimes we would have dripping on it - there was always dripping left over from the Sunday roast, pork was the best.

I have so many, but distinctly remember the hot, buttered toast with a cup of tea given to me after the birth of my children. I was in the process of making a roast dinner when I went into labour with my son, so was particularly hungry when he arrived a short time after!

Shepherds pie, mum's stew with dumplings, rice pudding , jam roll poly, could go on. Everything traditional since shool days, had a marvelous school cook.

Bread and milk was standard fare for older babies/young children in the past, wasn’t it? I’ve certainly often read about it in old novels.

I particularly remember a quote about a child* who was ill in bed being given buttered toast and a picture book, instead of bread and milk and lessons.
*given the context, from a family that was certainly not very poor.

I'm glad you are fine after surgery. smile
My comfort food has always been bread and milk. White bread is best for this. Break it into pieces and cover it with hot milk and sugar. I love it.

I love this too! grin

Chocolatelovinggran Sat 14-Oct-23 11:12:16

Oh and I hate rice pudding: the work.of the devil.

Chocolatelovinggran Sat 14-Oct-23 11:11:22

Good to hear that you ate feeling better WWM - I enjoy your posts. I'm with the anything- in- cheesy- sauce group. I'd probably eat shredded birch bark if it was covered in cheese sauce.

Henetha!
This was my mothers thing…….never heard of it any other time.
She was Scottish and I wondered if this was from there?

I am post op too WWM - a week ahead of you,
but when my appetite returned it was baked jacket Potato + grated Cheddar cheese that I craved,
and juicy melon and grapes in a dish.
Keep recuperating slowly. 💐

Always macaroni cheese, my absolute favourite meal.
I haven’t had it for ages as I’m trying to lower my cholesterol, but I shall very much miss it in the winter months.

winterwhite Sat 14-Oct-23 09:53:31

Tomato sandwiches made with - dare I say it - crusty white bread. Oh and real butter.

Primrose53 Sat 14-Oct-23 09:08:18
