What can you do with left over lamb?

I cooked shoulder of lamb yesterday and it was lovely. My husband sliced it all up and there was quite a lot left.

It just looks so revolting cold with little blobs of fat all over. 🤮

What could I do with it other than give it to a neighbour’s dog?

Don’t throw it away!! I have a real aversion to wasting perfectly good food, especially nowadays. I agree to disliking cold lamb, but there are plenty of ways of using it, as many grans have already posted.
If enough of it is actually sliceable, I make some gravy and lay the slices in. Make sure the meat is covered with gravy - I use a frying pan. Bring to the boil for a short time then simmer until the meat is piping hot. All you need then are some potatoes and veggies for a lovely dinner! And if you don’t want to eat it in the next few days, freeze the slices and use in the same way whenever you like. In fact I’ve got som frozen slices in the freezer now and it’s given me an idea for tea ….

I’d have been cross, too, Sago, or perhaps ‘livid’ would be more apt.
When I’m a dictator, people who wantonly waste food will be thrown into a rat-infested dungeon for a fortnight, with the old mouldy crust thrown in. 😈

I love a lamb toastie. Slices of lamb in a sandwich, toasted. The fat melts and soaks into the bread and it is delicious eaten hot.

As the only one who enjoys lamb, I occasionally treat myself to a half leg. I carve it all up and after having some on my dinner(the others have other meats) , I just freeze the rest in useable portions for future roast dinners. I can get 4-5 dinners out of this for myself. I can't afford to waste food, always use up every scrap and lamb is so expensive now.

I used to make a curry with it cut up, I added a teaspoon of marmalade to it which was delicious. I used onion gravy as a sauce to which I added curry powder and marmalade. Delicious!

Layers of leftover lamb, onion, sliced raw potatoes in a saucepan (potato, lamb, onion, potatoes, meat onions topped with potato) 6oz lamb, 1 onion, about 1 lb potato for two. Add 400oz stock. Cover and cook on a medium/low light for 1 hour.

I am being very naughty but at the bitter end, after it has been used a couple of times, I’m thinking pussy cats. Saves buying cat food and makes a change for them. Possibly doggies but I don’t have a dog. I have to brag and say my pussy cat that I had before the 2 rescue cats I have now lived to the ripe old age of 23 - at least, because when he found us he was an adult stray. Very mixed diet, loved our leftovers!

I did say earlier that on the rare occasions I buy lamb I buy just enough so there is no waste. Tesco had lamb shoulder half price and this piece should have been £20 ish and was the smallest they had.

A good big chump chop is a meal in itself. You could even roast it in an airfryer and serve with roast potatoes, mint sauce and gravy.

Sago I think deliberately wasting food like that is immoral, especially where meat is concerned.

I remember a programme with Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall some time ago where he worked with a group of families who use to roast a chickenn every Sunday and then throw the remains awaay after the meal. They were truly gobsmacked when he showed them how to get 2 more family meals out of the carcase.

Even in current inflationary times, when I know certain groups are in deep food poverty, there are still 100s of 1,000s of tons of food being thrown away by families who at the same time claim that they are cutting their food expenditure.

I turn leftovers into lamb in red wine.

Trim off most but not all the fat.

Reheat the leftovers lamb in a frying pan. The fat melts and you can remove more with a spoon at this stage. You need to leave a little.

Add half a teaspoon of garlic puree, cook it through in the residual fat.

Add a teaspoon of flour per person to the pan, stir in so the fat is absorbed.

Add half a glass of red wine, some water and leftover gravy from the roast dinner, stir constantly and bring to the boil.

Add half a lamb stock cube and a smidgeon of red currant jelly.

Simmer for fifteen minutes.

Serve with mashed potato and veg.

A sprig of rosemary can also be added to ring the changes.

Leftover lamb can also be made into lamb biryani (I use a Sharwood’s sachet of spices).

Sago - this will be the first year I won’t cook a turkey in 40 years. We are all going to one of my daughter’s for the Big Lunch. I’ll really miss turkey heated in the extra gravy I’d have made (and hidden) alongside left over or fresh veg after the long Boxing Day walk. The cold curs of turkey and ham, a quick sandwich, turkey in a cream sauce with pasta then , the wonderful soup made with the carcass as its base.
My mum always used every scrap of the Sunday roast and the focus on eating well with no waste has stayed with me

My lovely neighbour last Christmas came in as I was making stock from the turkey carcass, she told me she had cooked a turkey, used the breast meat and put the rest in the bin.

I was so cross, she didn’t get why.

We waste nothing, I made a batch of dhal to freeze yesterday to use up some fresh spinach.

Meal planning can save a small fortune.

Stovies for me but no beetroot, yuck.

I love lamb cold, in a sandwich, salad or with French fries and vegetables.

I live on my own so I only buy lamb steak or similar so there is no waste.

If you buy a cut which just provides enough for your meal, such as fillet or cutlets, there will be no leftovers.
