Raspberry jam

I tried to buy a jar of Raspberry jam, in Tesco last week. Unless I wanted a Bon Maman, or similar, all they had was a cheap seedless jam?
Looked on Waitrose web site, similar.
Does nobody like the old fashioned jam with seeds/ pips, anymore? Or am I just being perverse?

Camilla have you used this recipe? I just looked at it and would never use it not worth time and effort for 2 jars of jam. Plus my way works every time and have been making preserves for over 40 years.

Make your own, it's so easy and far more delicious than anything you can buy! www.fabfood4all.co.uk/quick-easy-raspberry-jam-no-pectin/

Whiff The only veg I eat that's not pre-prepared is broccoli, it's the only one I've got the strength to cut through. I can't grip a potato peeler, I even bought a fat one in the shape of a potato as it's so much more bulbous, thinking I could actually grip it tightly enough to use but no luck there. I can't eat anything in the onion family due to digestive problems. I use lots of herbs instead. I buy fish preprepared and the local farm shops will prepare meat any which way you want. I don't use quorn as I find it tasteless without onions. I do a Turkish lentil soup which requires chopped carrots, bought already prepared, and onions which I do without but add cumin and the tiniest smidgeon of onion salt. Other soups, frozen veg in stock, mushrooms which are just wiped over. All quite simple really but oh how they would taste so much better with onions.

St Dalfour Raspberry fruit spread - made with raspberries and apple juice instead of added sugar. Absolutely delicious and very more-ish. It's available from Ocado, Waitrose, Morrisons and Tesco and probably many other places.

Missed bit out veg go from frozen straight in my pan from frozen for my stew same when I make my soup. My finger trembled and pressed post before I preview . Hence spelling mistakes and bits that don't make sense. But I hope you get the idea.

All my baking etc is all short cuts.

missdeke I can't peel sweet potatoes which I like better than potatoes or butternut squash..What I do is line a roasting tin with foil. Wash the SP then put into the tin prick a couple of times put in bit of water and cover with foil same with BN. I put into the oven when reheating my dinner for hour. Once I take my dinner out I turn off the oven and leave them in for hour . I then put them into a bowl once cold put into the fridge next day easy to peel . I bag them up and put into the freezer.

I can't cook everyday as I never know how I am going to be each day..So I make a stew of either large chicken breast ,Quorn mince, chicken pieces or sausages browned and cut into 8 using kitchen scissors. With pearl barely and plenty of veg which once cooked for 90 mins I portion into 6 oven proof dishes they way always have a health dinner.

I have a flippy peeler for carrots . I can top and tail but that's it ,onions I peel, courgettes top and tail, leeks the same but cut length ways and wash if necessary. Mushrooms are wiped with kitchen roll and end of stork cut off.peppers cut in half and deseed, toms cut in half and core cut cut out. They are then frozen as I can't chop them. They go into to my from frozen once cooked I use kitchen scissors to cut into it. Hand to hold handle in each hand to use. But it works . Not pretty but tasty.

I make my red lentil and whatever soup it's whatever veg I have . The one I am eating at the moment is made from carrots , onions, courgette and cauliflower as that what I had at the time. I cook for 90 mins and blitz with my stick blender. Put into a large plastic box enough for 6 lunches. My porridge is cooked in the microwave because I could stir long enough . As I lose control of my hands plus they tremble all the time.

I eat the same food all year round even on a hot summer's day. But I always have healthy meals in my fridge.

I love raspberry jam, my favourite. The raspberries you get in the UK are to die for, much nicer than ours. The flavour, oh so rich, compared with the watery objects we get. Mind you , if you’re talking mangoes, we conquer the world!
I get that Bon Maman jam and also Beerenberg is lovely but I think that is a local one here.

Whiff I only go to a coffee morning once a week and another member of the group makes the cakes. Plus I have a tiny kitchen with no space for kitchen equipment such as mixers etc. My arthritis precludes me from preparing lot of food, I can't even manage to peel potatoes these days. All my 7 grandkids are well above the age where I need to look after them now as well. So cake baking is not on my list of prioritiesbut I absolutely enjoy homemade cakes made by someone else.

Lidl reduced sugar jam - very fruity

missdeke marmalade makes a delicious cake ..

I agree, when I used to make cakes that was one of my favourites. I live alone so if I make a cake now I'm tempted to eat all of it. grin

I am out and about tomorrow, if I am up to it, I will pop into Waitrose and see if they have any of their own Raspberry preserve. Sounds good Casdon.
So thanks to one and all who have given me ideas, then after Christmas, I might even go mad and try some with frozen raspberries.

NotSpaghetti Wed 20-Dec-23 14:14:57

Casdon

Waitrose own brand do a raspberry preserve which has seeds, and is delicious - I’ve got some in my fridge.

Yes! Very good. I just saw I have this in my fridge too!

I once read that there was something special about the pips of raspberrries that was good for your health... just a bit of a nuisance as can get stuck in teeth.

missdeke Wed 20-Dec-23 12:18:06

Whiff Thanks for that, I use lemon juice but not as much as that, I just use less sugar to make it less sweet. I don't very often make marmalade as I live on my own and now my mum has gone It makes it difficult to get through all the jam I make from fruit in my garden. My sister doesn't like raspberries (weird!) so I can't pass the jam onto her. I do make blackcurrant and gooseberry jam too both of them seedless because that means you don't have to top and tail the fruit before you start. I'm all for a short cut.

I went into my local farm shop and cafe this morning for the first time in person since Covid. MG I got a shock. It’s twice as large and full of goodies that you normally only get in a delicatessens. Lots of jams, including raspberry from artisan suppliers. Suggest you try your farm shop Auntieflo.

Lilyflower Wed 20-Dec-23 12:05:01

It's the easiest and quickest jam to make. Buy some raspberries (I usually get them yellow stickered) and put them in a pan with the same weight of sugar. You can add some pectin if you want but it's nice 'soft set'. Bring to the boil and pot into warm jars. I rarely get the jam cool, before I snaffle some.

All the taste of Bonne Maman or artisan jams and not so expensive.

Whiff Wed 20-Dec-23 12:01:21

missdeke I use 2 x 250ml of lemon juice per kilo of fruit. It helps with the set also I don't like my jam sweet. I use the same amount no matter what fruit I use even those with good pectin. But my jams aren't as set as brought ones because they use thickening.

Don't know if you make your own marmalade but I have posted a lemon marmalade recipe but it's my way because I can't make things like I did due to disability but still do things I like to do . Hate saying this it's the thread called Whiffs recipes but it not just for my recipes it's for anyone who wants to post theirs.

missdeke Wed 20-Dec-23 11:50:09

Whiff How much fruit do you use to 2 bottles of lemon juice? I get a glut of raspberries so freeze my fruit to make the jam, I do take the seeds out from habit, I always gave my mum jam that I made but she found the seeds always got under her dentures. Old habis die hard!

RosesAreRed21 Wed 20-Dec-23 11:42:49

I have had the same problem - I love the seeded raspberry jam

Overthemoongran Wed 20-Dec-23 11:22:29

My raspberry crop wasn’t great this year, certainly not enough for jam making and the fresh ones were too expensive. I bought frozen raspberries from Tesco and the jam is gorgeous.
I will probably do this in future and save our home grown ones to eat fresh or to freeze for delicious desserts.

Frenchgalinspain Tue 19-Dec-23 14:35:11

I make mine during the holiday season.

The Seville brand I purchase is amazing and it is called Seville Old Fashioned ..

Their rasberry with seeds is my favourite and their strawberry is extraordinary as is their black berry.

Freya5 Mon 18-Dec-23 17:15:12

Asda sell a delicious Extra Special Raspberry jam, with seeds, cheap too for those on a budget.
