win it was the cannot afford good food, better than charity. that upset me. Who on earth would think that an acceptable comment to make? Does it mean that only those who choose to pay more for their vegetables are eating good food and the rest of us are scrabbling for the dregs but, afterall, it's better than charity? It's the sneering, condescending and judgemental tone that's hurt me. The thought that someone was standing by yesterday whilst I bought my Christmas veg and was thinking to themselves "thank goodness I can afford good food and don't have to scrabble for mine. Unlike her. Still, at least she's not accepting charity."

Just unbelievable.

FF there are posts on this thread by people who are relatively wealthy

karmalady Sat 23-Dec-23 12:21:35

scrabbling equates to `grabbing` at the expense perhaps of those who really cannot afford to pay the full price ie there will be nothing much left for the needier people who cannot afford full price

Why do people react to ridiculous comments. Fanny you go and get your vegetables like we all will, no one is judging you, me or anyone else. It is the price in Tesco at the moment end of. Tesco's veg. are perfectly alright and not inferior in any way. Tesco put a note on FB yesterday asking us all to. bring an extra £1 and buy veg for it, then donate it to the local food bank where people really receive wonderful charity. Why do you not do that if it makes you feel better. It was a horrible comment, but best ignored, so Karmalady does not get the satisfaction of feeling superior.

To repeat as said above, I hope the farmers are getting a fair whack. I wish the veg was this price during the year so that everyone could benefit from good fresh food.
Waitrose is my closest shop and they are doing 30p veg bags.
What I spend on the difference I save on petrol as I can walk there...before anyone sneers.

Scrabbling??? What? So families on low incomes, pensioners on fixed incomes and people who want to cook from fresh on a budget are reduced to scrabbling for their food? So you can afford to pay over the odds for the same vegetables, how lovely for you. My sole income is the basic state pension and offers like these enable me to enjoy the same meals as you, but now that I know that someone is judging me from a distance as scrabbling for my food, I'll go without.

Unbelievably tone deaf remark considering the cost of living circumstances for millions of people. angry

They were selling sprouts, carrots and broccoli for 15p a bag in Asda, too.
I’d hardly describe it as scrabbling, karmalady, and rather unkind to say, I think.

Thank you Kate, good for those who are struggling this christmas and cannot afford good food, better than charity. Not for me, I can pay and will not be scrabbling

Wow! Its not “scrabbling” to get a deal on your veg and I will be buying those deals without “scrabbling”!!!

Jane43 Sat 23-Dec-23 11:33:58

Sainsburys had bags of potatoes reduced to 15p yesterday.

I appreciate the discounts but wonder how much the farmers are being paid. Are the supermarkets using this promo as a loss leader? Thanks to the farmers for keeping us fed throughout the year.

I have some on order to be delivered tomorrow.
They were a similar price last year. I remember our local Tesco selling bags of sprouts for 1p a bag, late on Xmas Eve.

For anyone who is interested, Tesco are selling bags of veg for 15p including a 2kg bag of potatoes. We have bought carrots, parsnips, a red cabbage and potatoes all 15p each. Cheaper than Aldi where they are 19p.
