I live in the south east where there are lots of farmers markets and farm shops and believe me they are not cheap. I can understand why people turn to supermarkets they have no choice they cannot afford farmers prices.

Um, who do you think grows the fresh produce that the supermarkets sell?

I'm delighted to report that I had a wonderful hour scrabbling in Aldi this afternoon. I got a large turkey crown at 50% off, a large beef Wellington at 70% off, a whole side of salmon at 50% off and 4 Scottish smoked trout fillets at 70% off. Total saving was £41.43.

I got some in Asda yesterday. Today I had to pop in for ibuprofen and saw they Still had loads of 15o veg. Including broccoli. but be careful as it looked a little past it.

I am new to this forum but must say how refreshing it is to find retirees with everyday problems rather than the super examples of ab sailing and mountaineering over 60s dished up to us. My question is what do you all think of vegetable boxes versus supermarket vegetables? Are they worth it?

It definitely wasn’t inferior produce at our Tesco.The best broccoli we have had in ages.

I miss him so much. But l do have a wonderful son for whom l am thankful.

I’m pleased I have those bags that more than double the life of fruit and vegetables. On my own, so I’ve probably enough veggies to last most of January and any on its last legs after that will go into soup.

I did some shopping online today via Fresh and Amazon and I found 2.5kg of potatoes for 15p and broccoli was also being sold cheaply.

I did not want to go out as birdbrain thought everything had been bought and people do not wear masks where I live. I have enough food now for a week.

Sorry! Forget that mess age - it didn't go where it was supposed to go. Why can't I learn to use this site properly?

I got my veg yesterday from Tesco and noticed the tiddler sized caulis on Prime display, so I lifted the tray and got 2 twice the size, grabbed another 2 heads broccoli and another bag carrots. The sprouts didn't look nice so I went to.Aldi (was going that way for fuel anyway) got 2 really nice bags of sprouts and 3 tiramisus, (1 is in fridge, 2 are in the freezer, they freeze really well!) We're lucky, my town is only classed as small, but we have Tesco, Iceland, Lidl, Aldi, a small Morrison's (was a little co-op so expensive for me) and Sainsbury (but they've annoyed me, so I'm boycotting.them,.have written letter to them too!)

But Christmas.Day for us is just a.bigger roast dinner, we don't go 3 or 4 courses or booze, it's dinner, pud, cup of tea, eaten, washed, put away by 2pm!

I took advantage of cheap carrots, parsnips and turnips but not for my Christmas Dinner. Still no oven, despite moving here back in the summer! Hopefully if will be all working by middle of next week. The vegetables are for the pony who is currently in my paddock ( he is not mine but I do have a real soft spot for him. I think he likes me but that is probably because I give him carrots, apples, etc!) So on Christmas Day I will visit him, go for a walk and snuggle up on the sofa. Fifth Christmas without DH and find I am struggling more this year than ever before so prefer to be alone rather than inflict my misery on others. To those who have lost loved one I send you my best wishes.

Sainsburys also have potatoes and sprouts ( and possibly other Christmas dinner veg) significantly cheaper than usual lizzy if that shop is nearer for you. I’m sorry I can’t remember the exact cost but around 15 p a bag possibly.

My question is what do you all think of veggie boxes as opposed to supermarket veg? I guess to some degree this thread answers this question but would welcome more information.

My nearest Tesco is 35 miles away! 😥

DH went shopping for me the other day, to ALDI, when I just didn't feel up to it.
Potatoes were on the list, and I had seen that they were selling them for 15p.
So far so good.
When he came home, he had paid £1.35 for a bag! Why?
He just probably didn't look and see the bargain bin.
He is not a good chap to send out for a bargain.
But I was so pleased not to have to go out.

I appreciate the discounts but wonder how much the farmers are being paid. Are the supermarkets using this promo as a loss leader? Thanks to the farmers for keeping us fed throughout the year.

I too hope that these are loss leaders by the supermarkets and that they're not making farmers subsidise this. Supermarkets have a stranglehold on the market and make profits at the expense of farmers.

Yes, I did buy some cheaper veg but I know how much goes to waste, at a loss for farmers, because supermarkets reject perfectly good produce.

Lidl is also selling veg at 15p per bag - they can all do it as they source their produce from the same place

I was pleased to find the 15p options for veg in Tesco's the other day.
Be canny though - I had weighed and priced my loose broccoli (£1.20), then saw the plastic wrapped heads were 15p - a very hasty swop ensued!

Poor bloody farmers! They are the ones subsiding this. I am just as keen for a bargain but it’s rarely the supermarkets that lose out.

An advert for Tesco eh ? Are you on commission ...or staff I wonder! Plenty of supermarkets are almost giving veg away at the moment - including Aldi!!
