Frozen onions

Anyone know why frozen onions only come diced. I can't be the only person who sometimes uses sliced onions rather than diced ones. I would love to be able to buy sliced onions for batch cooking - and not red ones.

Try looking in Asian food stores, i have found them there but not recently.

Tsk, tsk...

Could you ask a restaurant manager if you could pay one of their employees to slice a mountain of onions for you?

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 12-Jul-24 21:14:43

Good for you! Not all of us want to slice and freeze mountains of onions.

Mojack26 Fri 12-Jul-24 20:58:32

Slice and freeze yourself....I do...

I was thinking the same, made fajitas and diced onions were not the same, lucky had some frozen sliced red onion, plus they are so finely chopped, shame don’t do sliced .

^onions are cheap^

They are 21p each at Tesco. Not too bad if they are big ones, but sometimes if they are all quite small…

Would rather buy them by weight.

I bought a large onion at Tesco and was shocked at the 'each' price as I usually buy from Sainsburys where they are by weight. If I get a large one I often only use half as I'm on my own so I keep the remainder in the fridge but occasionally it may go to waste if I forget to use it soon enough. Thankfully I don't find preparing onions a problem - rarely make me cry and hands not too arthritic yet - but I appreciate it could be a problem for some. I've not used frozen ones as I assumed they would lose some flavour. Are red onions too mild as it sounds like they are available sliced?

A friend of mine got several trays of bags of onions, free on Olio. Gave me about7 bags. Bit of a chore but I chopped a lot and sliced a lot, then froze them. Still have some left and put them I. The fridge. Also made some onion soup!

kittylester Fri 12-Jul-24 13:42:41

I'm obviously not trying hard enough. grin

PipandFinn Fri 12-Jul-24 13:13:56

I found it impossible to buy Organic frozen chopped onions so I buy quite a few bags (especially when on offer) and chop them in processor or use my veg chopper thingy, weigh, bag and freeze.. 😊

kittylester Fri 12-Jul-24 13:12:45

I use them is soups and casseroles but would agree that they are not good for frying.

I'm making vast amounts of Paprika Chicken which require vast amounts of sliced onions.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 12-Jul-24 13:05:35

I use them in soups and casseroles and they’re fine. However they are no good for frying.

Philippa111 Fri 12-Jul-24 12:59:02

I’ve never used frozen onions. I always think they can’t have as much flavour as fresh. Am I correct?
I’m a bit of a fresh where possible person. My exceptions are frozen peas and sweetcorn. .

I don’t mind stuffing a few mushrooms but there is nothing enjoyable about slicing umpteen onions.

Agreed, and I remember many moons ago phelping my parents prepare jars of pickled onions.

Ziplok Fri 12-Jul-24 12:35:51

Amazon and eBay have some.

RakshaMK Fri 12-Jul-24 11:25:34

I'm going to suggest that sliced onions, especially when frozen, are too fragile to process effectively. They'd end up with a lot of small pieces that wouldn't class as sliced onions

cc Fri 12-Jul-24 11:25:13

I obviously do very different cooking and freezing to many of you as I seldom have vast quantities of onions to slice.
Although I don't enjoy chopping onions I've found that fresh ones fry without releasing so much liquid so wouldn't bother to buy frozen.
Unlike most of you I'm also not bothered about slicing onions as it is so quick, but I'm happy to admit that I used my Magimix when I needed to slice a lot for food for a big party.
Perhaps the answer is to find a friend who has a food processor with a slicing disk and ask if you can use it for an hour? There will always be a few slices that need to be cut again by hand. I've also used a mandolin but find the sharp blades a bit dangerous!

grin

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 11-Jul-24 08:49:27

Exactly. We can all slice onions but don’t want to slice heaps of the ruddy things ourselves.

kittylester Thu 11-Jul-24 08:37:10

I think most people have missed the point - I want to buy sliced onions not slice my own.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 11-Jul-24 08:28:51

Blimey! Child and sharp knife? No way.

madeleine45 Thu 11-Jul-24 08:06:41

Ah think laterally! Do you have a grandchild or young person you know who would like to earn some pocket money? Get them to do it for you (wearing their swimming goggles to keep from eyes stinging) Then you can choose best onions and decide how you want them sliced. Then freeze on open trays and then you can pack into bags where they will stay loose so you can get out as much or as little you want to use. I love my onions and most of my savoury recipes begin take one - or two- onions. I always lightly fry my onions in a little oil before putting them into casseroles. It is quite a different taste when they have been fried to just fresh taste. Most of my casserole or mince cooking has in it fried onions and I love chopped up celery, and also usually carrots, peppers , and mushrooms. When my son was very young he decided he did not like vegetables. Well being a grown up allows you to use your brain to outwit this. He thought he was doing well when I told him that he could have soup instead and he was also very happy to eat mince "without vegetables" as he thought. Of course they were all in the soup and the mince. But that way we had no hassle and no arguments and he happily ate these for ages until he then decided that vegetables were ok later. Take a lot to outwit Mum!! Oh this is making me hungry right now.

kittylester if you go onto eBay and type sliced white onions in there is a seller that has them. Pretty expensive though

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 10-Jul-24 17:06:01

I’m lucky that my husband will slice onions for me because they make my eyes run so much. Chopped frozen onions are brilliant for casseroles, cottage pie etc, but for frying you need freshly sliced ones.

dogsmother Wed 10-Jul-24 17:02:36

Oh my goodness I loathe onion chopping and slicing, my poor eyes and arthritic wrists say NO. I don’t if I can avoid it and love using frozen.
