I made nectarine jam recently and having never had it didn't know what to expect. Well, to say my family loves it is an understatement! It's like summer in a jar!

We enjoyed it on Sunday with a cream tea to celebrate England getting to the Euros final.

What was the last jam you made and how was it?

Does making orange and pineapple marmalade using a can of prepared oranges count?

Embarrassed to say I have never made jam or marmalade either come to that. Hardly eat jam but in latter years have come to like Marmelade.

Gooseberry, made from our own crop of very small sweet gooseberries - delicious!

This morning 8lbs of berry and orange jam..

Made tom chutney last week week before mango chutney.

I also make Seville orange marmalade and lemon marmalade.
Strawberry jam next week.
Baking tomorrow for my craft group.
Gingerbread rocks and Seville marmalade rocks .

Because of disability my hands tremble all the time so have to bake my way. Which everyone loves.

Never use tinned preserves for jam or marmalade. I use real fruit. Like I always bake from scratch.

Whiff Tue 16-Jul-24 16:41:12

I always either freeze the fruit from raw or use frozen fruit. That way just put it into my persevering pan over night to defrost never add extra water as I blitz with sticky blender and add sugar and lemon juice . Adding water dilutes the flavour of the jam .

Always use cider vinegar for chutney's gives great flavour ..

I would like to be able to make jam to enter into our parish jam making competition but my jam is either too runny or too stiff. Alas! Alack!

That looks so yummy! Looks like you eat your scones the Devon way. My neighbour is from Devon and insists this is the right way but I have Cornish family so eat with the cream first and jam second.

Tuaim if you want idiot proof recipes for jams, marmalade and chutneys I have some . I had to make them idiot proof for me because I can't do them the way I did 20 years ago.

I have had to make all recipes idiot proof for me. But they do work.

I haven't made for a couple of years, but if I'm lucky to be given Plumbs, Mulled Wine Jam, ready for Christmas.
Found the recipe in a WI cook book, made a few times it's fabulous.

It's actually the Cornish way with the cream on top. I was making Rodda's clotted cream scone recipe from a tea towel they once gave me and it even says on there to serve it this way. I usually serve the other way round to show off the jam but did this quickly for my daughter who was off to watch the Euros:-)

Blackberry jam with last year's blackberries from the freezer.
Normally I'd make bramble jelly but didn't have the time (or patience).

We have no plums at all on our tree this year, so no plum jam.

Yes, that's the Cirnidh way.
We prefer it that way even though DH is a Devon boy.

Oh dear, when you need Autocorrect it's not there!

Cornish way - jam first, cream on top. Plain scones, not fruited.

Callistemon213 Tue 16-Jul-24 23:18:02

The nectarine jam looks delicious.

I made it once and it was lovely 🙂

Catterygirl Tue 16-Jul-24 23:20:11

Never made it but SIL in Turkey makes it. She isn’t Turkish.

No worries, I think this software was developed many moons ago and hasn't moved on. Very clunky!

I made ‘Christmas jam’ as a gift for my grandson’s 7th birthday last week. It’s basically red berry jam with added orange juice, cinnamon and a little bit of mixed spice. My grandson loves it and FaceTimes me to let me know when he’s running out of it.

I make jam for all the family as we have an allotment and grow raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, loganberries, plums and figs - the latter makes the most delicious jam when paired with the zest and juice of lemons. Everyone in the family has a favourite jam.

Today I started on a batch of redcurrant wine and the blackcurrants have been picked and are now steeping in vodka and sugar. Both should be ready for Christmas, but I have last years still to be drunk first.

Last week I made some orange marmalade because the oranges are cheap and juicy here just now. A lot easier than I thought, thanks to the good old Breville whiz. It is lovely- I added a couple of lemons as well.

I made 40 pots of marmalade yesterday for sale in my church. I always use a pressure cooker for a fresher , lighter flavour.

Gorgeous gooseberry which I had on toast this morning, I have frozen my blackcurrants for future jam. My jams will store for years, I am meticulous with temperature, sterilising etc. A good tip is a tsp of a strong alcohol on top and I never use wax circles. My marmalade is best matured for years, absolutely gorgeous. When I make jam or bottle fruits, I always make sure to get the all important pop as the vacuum sets in

I have lots of 500ml kilner jars, the old style screw tops and you can lift the jars by holding the thin lid. The vacuum holds it very tight so it has to be pierced to open

Tuaim Wed 17-Jul-24 06:43:49

Thanks for putting me straight on the Cornish and Devon way. I had forgotten. But they are both sooo yummy!

Esmay Wed 17-Jul-24 10:06:59

A great tip on pouring some alcohol on jam or marmalade from karmalady .

I can never remember the difference between eating cream teas the Cornish or Devonian way .
I now realise that I eat mine the Devon way -cream first then the jam .
I like a warm plain scone and prefer apricot jam not strawberry nor raspberry .
I have to admit to loving whole apricots preserved in brandy .
I feel inspired to make some apricot jam next time they are in season .

I've just made apricot jam funnily enough:-) Had it on a scone last night but had run out of clotted cream sadly!

The last jam I made was bullace a few years ago. I haven't opened it yet.

Most years bullfinches eat the bullace flower buds so we rarely get much of a crop.
