Hello, when you have Brie or Camembert on a French stick, is it the done thing to butter the bread as well, or just spread the cheese on it alone ?, I don't have a clue !

Norah I like Brötchen, lovely fir breakfast, not seen them here, but never heard of stangenbrot.

How much more exciting things sound in another language!
Nothing exotic about Brötchen or Stangenbrot - they are just bread rolls and what we often call a French stick respectively.

Precisely why I make our bread, we like German/Austrian breads and dislike store bought breads (never seen Brotchen Suffolk).

I have butter with everything.

Are you preparing something for other people? I would just put it all out and let them help themselves to what they want, however they like it.

Butter, every day of the week!

I bake bread, brotchen, and stangenbrot - no butter or cheese.

Opinions vary, do whatever pleases you.

I’m a total butter fiend but not with a soft cheese on bread 🥖 - come to think of it, I’d do without the cheese…or maybe eat the buttered bread then cheese, separately😋

MissInterpreted Wed 07-Aug-24 15:45:28

Butter. The answer is always butter...

Ziplok Wed 07-Aug-24 15:42:52

Personally, I just spread the cheese on it. If it’s a hard cheese, such as cheddar, then I’d perhaps add some spread/butter, depending how I was feeling at the time. As it is, cheese (and butter) is an occasional treat these days as I need to watch my cholesterol levels. I haven’t stopped eating them, just reduced how often and how much I have them.

I am not bothered about which is the correct way, I just love the added taste of real butter!

M0nica Wed 07-Aug-24 14:35:24

Why are people so obsessed by doing things the 'proper' way, rather than the way they prefer?

Whether I have butter onBread, with or without cheese is a matter of personal preference and how I feel on the day, the type of cheese, the type of bread and the quality of the butter.

Personally I prefer cheese on its own without bread, butter, biscuits, fruit, chutney and all the other various things that so often clutter a cheese board. Other people round me can eat as they like. I will stick to the cheese and to hell with all the rest.

I don’t feel I want butter if the cheese is soft. But I’ve always preferred cheese and crackers without butter, as well. No ‘done thing’ about any food choices, as far as I’m concerned - I try to eat what I want, and stop when I start to feel full.

I have to eat gluten free bread and I’m sure kittylester will agree that if a slathering of butter improves the flavour and texture you’re jolly well going to do it.

Then you can enjoy the Brie! 😋

My excuse every time, merlot!

Aveline Wed 07-Aug-24 13:24:12

With soft cheeses I wouldn't even be aware that there was butter underneath it. So no butter for brie or camembert but butter if hard cheeses

It depends how greedy I'm feeling at the time, but then I'd no idea there were rules about it.

Is this to do with U and non U?

I wish we had a 😀 emoticon

Aldom

The French do both. Enjoy.

True. But butter is often counted as an extra filling if you’re buying a sandwich so I’d have it without.
At home, bread, butter, cheese.

aggie Wed 07-Aug-24 11:44:17

I love butter with my cheese of any sort yumm yummy!

I've no idea what is the done thing about any food and I don't care. I like butter so I spread it liberally. Try it both ways maybe and decide which you like. 🧈🧀

Fresh crusty white bread + butter + cheese + wine = heaven and not on my hips !
Enjoy what you like and stop worrying !

Up to you but I watch the calories and don’t put butter on, especially with creamy cheeses.
