Gdd1 requested her favourite apple crumble yesterday- only there will be 18 of us - 13 extended family plus host family of 5 - friends of dd - in a gite in the Dordogne*.

So I bought the wherewithal yesterday, inc. a mountain of apples and a vast pan - 1 kg flour and 500 g butter to rub in for the topping - how I miss my trusty old Kenwood Chef!! But it’s now ready for the oven.

*thank goodness it’s nothing like as hot as it was last year!

I use my large roasting tin to make my crumble to feed 11 of us and plenty for seconds

I cook the apples and the crumble topping separately then combine them to serve, it means it’s all crumbly instead of having a soft floury underlay.😃

Oh I could really eat some crumble!

Me too, our son dropped off a bag of apples from his tree yesterday so apple crumble will be on the menu this weekend.

A few days later we had a smaller apple and blackberry crumble - kids had picked a lot of blackberries. It was only about half the size of the monster, but for that we did find Crème Anglaise (custard!) in a chiller cabinet. I have to say that it wasn’t as good as Ambrosia Devon custard, though.

I was given a few apples on Sunday, and thought I might make apple sauce. Instead I made a crumble. Witzend, it's all your fault 🤗.
Like SueDonim, I added oats into the crumble, and we had half of it tonight with ice- cream.
Very healthy and delicious.

I’ve thought of little but apple crumble since reading your OP last night Witzend. This evening we’ve had apple crumble with blackcurrants from my DD’s garden and brambles from another local source. I included oats in the crumble mix so that means it was a healthy pudding! grin

That reminds me, I have a small peach crumble in my freezer... I think I will pull it out for tonight!

Yours sounds delightful, Witzend. It's having all the people around to enjoy it that makes it extra special.

I have made Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall’s crumble, or fumble, for a large crowd. Apple and topping cooked separately for guests to help themselves. Went down a treat

I have been making Apple Crumble all week too. I have an apple tree in my garden but the apples keep falling off and getting bruised and eaten by various critter in the grass. So every time one falls off I have to grab it quick. Also its an old tree an often something (critter wise) gets to it before it even falls. I end up freezing lots of it too and dole it out during the Winter months for people to take home.

I love homemade apple crumble I bake the crumble separate from the apple. I top it when ready to serve because I don't like a soggy crumble I like buttery and crunchy.

MissAdventure Mon 19-Aug-24 11:51:54

Yes!
Just what I thought, something a little tart would go beautifully.

Yes, it is MissInterpreted, but even as I was eating it with a banana, I thought a nice crumble would have been ideal to go with it. smile

I'll need to test out a couple more tubs and get back to you, I reckon.

Yes, take one for the team there! gringringrin
I'm thinking rhubarb crumble here. We've still got plenty in the garden.

MissAdventure Mon 19-Aug-24 11:48:18

I got it in Iceland, Flappergirl

I have noticed that Asda are doing their own version, but no idea if it's as good.

I have made big Crumbles, I use a Roasting tin...
Also made a big cake in one too.. Handy, not just for Roasts.

Hope yours is scrumptious "Witzend" doubt you will get much left over so remember to get some. 😋

MissInterpreted Mon 19-Aug-24 11:20:53

MissAdventure

I had some Ambrosia custard ice cream a while go.

I bet that would go nicely with the crumble.

Ooh, I spotted that in the freezer section the other day - is it nice?

B9exchange Mon 19-Aug-24 11:19:44

Can't imagine having two lots of preparation and washing up, mammoth crumble for us, 17 when the family all get together. One of them insists on a gooseberry crumble though, groseilles verts difficult to find in France I imagine! 😄

Where did you find that MissAdventure? I need to know for reasons of research obviously.

Mojack26 Mon 19-Aug-24 11:14:34

Why a monster apple crumble? Could you just not have made 3/4.. 2 made on Friday and 2 on Sat? Kept in fridge?

I’m enjoying it vicariously.

My mouth is watering imagining cinnamon, apple, buttery crumble and vanilla ice cream melting over the top.

I’m off for a lie down next to the fan.

(I’m diabetic so it’s a no no for me).

MissAdventure Sun 18-Aug-24 18:55:14

Ladled
Not lacked!!

MissAdventure Sun 18-Aug-24 18:54:36

Any chance of a pic? (Once you've lacked the thick, creamy custard on, of course)

You'll probably be too busy, I'm sure...
