Out Of Date Ingredients.

Have just made a chocolate cake and a Madeira cake, to use up ‘stuff’.

Eggs- more than a week out of date.

Drinking chocolate- more than a year OOD.

Baking spread- four months OOD.

Vanilla essence- nearly two years OOD.

Am I worried?

Not in the slightest. The only one would be the baking spread, but I tried it, tastes fine, not rancid or similar.

We shall enjoy the 🍰

No worries. I do that all the time. Sticking to dates is so so wasteful for this sort of ingredients. I do test eggs in water first, if the are upright or float, I get rid. And open each individually in cup, look and smell.

During the first lockdown, when supermarket shelves were bare, I used lots of out of date stuff from the cupboard - various dry goods (e.g. split peas) that were in some cases several years out of date. Some GF flour was at least 5 years out of date, but it helped to make a perfectly good Barm Brack, that only needed one egg, when eggs were scarce.

I never bother with dates , but I wanted to resurrect the breadmaker yesterday and noticed the flour was nearly 6 months out of date
Used it anyway
Bread fine
I did throw out the 18 month self-raising stiff though

I am becoming like my mother is, in this regard!

The kids come and sniff at cornflakes 1 week out of date!

You should see my spice rack.........some are a couple of years OOD but they still taste OK and we aren't dead yet.

I cooked a one day out of date chicken this week.
I had a good sniff and it smelled fine.
I did make sure it was thoroughly cooked and we have now eaten it and no ill effects.

On the other hand …. My Sister likes hot milk with her coffee, the milk in the fridge was one day past its date , i used it , and it went into a solid ball in the jug !
No coffee for sister , mine was ok in my tea

My son on one of his visits told me my Marmite was out of date by 4 years, oh well I'm still here with no ill effects. Although he took it upon himself to bin it, the fool doesn't he know Marmite is like fine wine it improves with age. Damn! I've had to buy another jar, obviously within it's sell by date period. Now when eating a slice of Marmite on toast it lacks that frison of excitement that only eating an out of date product can bringhmm

2 years! Well I can top that!

Just looked, I have some mild chilli powder that is Nov 2008!

(However, it might be an old jar with a newer batch put in there. Not sure. Never use it though)

I'm a firm believer in 'sniff it and see'. We both have strong stomachs, and the children survived without incident too.

I don't generally worry about dates on dried food. Herbs and spices for example never go off, they just lose their flavour.

However (and this is awful grin) when I moved last year I finally parted company with some ground ginger that was marked 9d. Yes, it was - not 9p in case you're wondering.

And I know it's history - my Mum took some food from my Nan 's kitchen after she died, and then I borrowed it from my Mum when I first got married in 1972 for some reason. I'm not a great lover of ginger so don't use it that often. It stayed in the cupboard as I knew it was my Nan's and then my Mum's. But I eventually came to the conclusion that getting sentimental over a pot of ground ginger was a bit ridiculous.

I made pancakes for my husband on pancake Tuesday, think the flour was about a year out of date, he survived
