Tinned pilchards

I used to love tinned pilchards with salad and was reminded of the fact the other day so doing my weekly shop I was going to get them but no Tesco had other ideas no tinned pilchards. Every other kind of tinned fish but no pilchards, they used to come in tomato sauce in a red tin I seem to remember.
Anyone seen them anywhere?

Aldi sells them here in tomato sauce, olive oil or some sort of curry sauce ( which I haven’t tried). Maybe we got the lot over here ?

Never, never, never, put dried fruit in a curry. Are you Australian by any chanc?. A friend of mine who lived in that country for a while, could never get to grips with their habit of putting dried fruit in curries. She used to refer to such dishes as Australian fruit salad.

My mother used to put sultanas in a curry - usually made with the remains of a lamb roast. I’m talking way back here, probably early 60s.
Actually I think fruit can go well with spicy lamb - AFAIK there are several e.g. Turkish/N.African dishes that combine spicy lamb with e.g. apricots.

They are always in stock in my local Waitrose. I know because I buy them. As well as cold in salad and hot on toast, I also have several other recipes that use them, including an excellent pilchard curry.

I hope its better than the sardine curry recipe we made as students.

A can of sardines, a handful of sultanas and a spoonful of curry powder. Mash. Heat up.

If there's no money in the gas meter, skip the heating up bit.

Just how I like them Oreo - with a bit of vinegar added to the mashing.

Or a lot of vinegar even 😁

Our Tesco and Morrisons stock pilchards. I don’t eat them but my dogs love them

grannyrebel7 Tue 24-Jun-25 10:54:35

Morrisons has always got them. We buy them for our dog. She loves them.

As children we used to have tinned pilchards in tomato sauce on toast for tea. Well mashed, all bits of bones removed!

I buy pilchards quite often for salads, sandwiches or fish pie. Not had any trouble getting them at Morrisons, Waitrose or via Ocado although I've noticed the small cans are not always available.

I've been chasing sardines for weeks. (And oddly, small tins of baked beans)

I’d pay to see that…..!

I guess pilchards and sardines are bedfellows and are hiding under a duvet somewhere!

That’s how rumours start…! 😂

The only thing I'm actually capable of chasing these days is my own tail.hmm

I've got the dirt on sardines and pilchards - I'm really undercover for the Daily Mail wink

Love it, ferry23! 😂

I always share a can with the dog…….

Even more delicious on toast when it is mashed up with a tablespoon or so of Philadelphia (or any soft cheese), and fresh lemon squeezed on top. Or, Tabasco. Yum!

Oh yes tanith. Thanks for the reminder.
I haven't had them for years. I used to like them on toast.

I have them mashed up on toast with black pepper at least once a week.😃

Yuk, only ever gave them to the cat!

Lucky cat.

We used to have Pilchards with salad at school that was many years ago….
Back then there was no choice you had what it was on the day and a pudding and all we had to drink was a jug of water on the table
And we were a lot healthier for it….😁

Apparently Sardines and Pilchards are both the same species, which has the Latin name Sardinus pilchardus. The smaller fish are known as Sardines and the larger, older fish are Pilchards. I found this on Google, by the way. I'm not an expert in fish species or Latin!

We had pilchards with salad most Sunday teatimes when I was little. Delicious! I've not bought them for a few years although DH is fond of them occasionally on toast.

Deedaa Fri 20-Jun-25 19:50:20

I know there is a shortage of sardines, and pilchards are basically just large sardines.

My local convenience store has them. It is Glenryck. I make fish cakes out of them - delicious, but my family complain the flavour is "too strong".
