…in the shops now - at any rate I’ve seen them in M&S and Sainsbury’s. 50p off in Sainsbury’s if you’ve got a Nectar card
🙂

I have cherry orchards literally on my doorstep. This year they have been exceptional. My favourite recipe is a salad of stoned cherries, crumbled feta, pistachios with a dressing made with pomegranate molasses as a sweetner. Yum !

Overdid them a little, I agree Aldis were very good. I too am very greedy for them but generally suffer the consequences!

Mt61, part of the high cost of cherries is that they are a fiddle to pick, so the labour costs are proportionally higher.
I live in Kent, and have heard that in the recent past, the best seasonal pickers came from Ukraine, and that they are sadly missed .

Spent yesterday at Highgrove.

His maj’s Cherries are a sight to behold😊.

In fact the whole garden is like heaven.

Aww- stop it. I am so jealous. The fruit in the UK tastes really nice, especially things like raspberries. I noticed the difference last time we were there. Our cherry season is pretty short and to get really good ones you need to go to a farm up the bush.

Japanese cherries in Harrods.

£145

I've actually had the pleasure of having one. Delicious. But I won't be buying any myself.

Welshy - I forgot to say that the bread should be toasted .
Brioche could be used instead .
I think that it could be made with with apricots and is in traditional Jewish cookery.
I'm wondering if toasted almonds would be nice on top .
I'll ask my Jewish friend .Her food is absolutely fantastic and it's her profession .

My good wife saw a roadside stall on Sunday with Cherries being prone to impulse buying bought a whole tray, we did eat a lot fresh, the rest seemed too good for jam so we stoned them and preserved them in brandy.

I’m not sure when they will be used but they will be very good!.

@Esmay

That sounds yummy.

I thought that I'd invented this recipe but it's apparently Jewish .
Warm up and sieve some black cherry jam and then sharpen with lemon juice .
Add some fresh cherries .I take the stones out first . Allow to cook.
Ladle over some fresh white bread .
I leave the crusts on - up to you .
Serve with clotted cream or whipped cream .

Cherries are incredibly good for you in many ways.
They reduce inflammation in the joints and lower blood pressure.
I love them .
And after I've eaten as many as I can I like to preserve some in brandy .

I love cherries, they are in season now in BC. We will be travelling south, including the Okanagan area where cherries are grown, so hope to have my fill! I think apricots will be starting as well.

I got some in Aldi on Saturday. Lovely and juicy.

The fat black British cherries from Sainsbury's are yummy and juicy

Georgesgran Sun 13-Jul-25 18:06:28

I think I’m odd - I don’t eat any fruit. 🤪

Welshy Sun 13-Jul-25 18:04:44

I am currently eating Picota Cherries. They are lovely but not British, they are Spanish.

I saw this thread earlier and meant to buy cherries to make a cherry Eton mess. Needless to say, I bought everything else I needed - but forgot the cherries. But we have rhubarb in the garden, so we're now having a rhubarb and custard Eton mess instead!

Oh Yum, I love anything rhubarb too smile

I’ve had pounds and pounds of them this year from the tree in my garden. I’ve given loads to my friend for jam, and frozen the rest for pies. Mine are morello cherries, too sour to eat raw.

Why can’t they just sell them at a lower price?

Loved the Napoleon cherries in Turkey. They were in season in May and June whist strawberries were a little later. The strawberries weren’t as good as ours.

Welshy Sun 13-Jul-25 17:36:30

I read a few days ago ..... The UK has experienced a warm, sunny spring, leading to a bumper crop of large, sweet, and juicy cherries. The season is also starting earlier than usual, with some farms reporting harvests in late May.

So why can't I find them in any of my local supermarkets sad
I can only see Spanish etc.

Changing the topic. I'm yet to see a British cucumber in ASDA at the moment too.

A farmer friend has stopped selling apples (not economic) and has made a BIG investment in growing cherries, which are in Waitrose right now.
His apples are made into delicious cider and apple juice.

My OH loves cherries, and as he has recently been diagnosed as having gout, was pleased to hear that they’re good for this condition.

ViceVersa Sat 05-Jul-25 14:04:03

Oh I love anything cherry related. I'm craving something cherry bakewell flavoured right now...
