Sausages

We don't eat many sausagesbut they have to be gluten free so as with all gf food at the more expensive end. I have lost count of the number of brands we have stopped eating all for the same reason. At the moment we are trying the premium brand sold in food halls and some supermarkets, four large sausages in a brown cardboard box. The insides taste good but the casings are more suited to a waterproof garment maker than as something you eat. They are tough, leathery and not easy to cut or is it just me?

If you have an M & S Simply Food you can go to, their sausages are outstanding; would recommend the one which says 60% pork. We had these recently for a BBQ and guests all commenting how good they are.

Waitrose Cumberland sausages are tasty. They don't claim to be gluten free because they contain potato starch.

Just skin them before or after cooking. My father always used.to insist on his g the skins of sausages removed before they got to his plate.

ROMILO definitely not just you

Does the toughness depend on whether the sausage casings are natural or synthetic? If you’ve found a taste and quality you like, maybe try squeezing out the filling, shape into patties and fry?

I have noticed in recent years sausage skins have changed. Are they no longer made from intestines? They seem tough and papery and I find unpleasant to eat. I have tried many types but none that taste like the skins of old fashioned bangers.

we don't eat many saysages, but when we do I always take the skins off first, some of them are like plastic,

pably15 Sun 24-Aug-25 12:22:10

Sausages,,,,don't know what language that was

ROMILO Sun 24-Aug-25 12:33:03

That's a good idea that I might try but we should be able to eat them as they come. Husband might have to forego his sausage and mash!

The word 'sausage' does not appear in the Bible. Just a fairly useful piece of info.

Tesco Finest Chipolatas are very good and gluten free

midgey Sun 24-Aug-25 13:12:40

Agree that Tesco’s Finest range of sausages are really good.

ROMILO Sun 24-Aug-25 14:10:04

It is not the taste or quality of the sausages that I have an issue with it is the tough leathery casings that spoil them.

Rosie51 Sun 24-Aug-25 14:15:51

DH always cooks when we have sausages and mash. He skins the sausages because I can't stand the casings. When he finds it impossible to skin them, then that casing is always thin enough to be OK for me.

dalrymple23 Sun 24-Aug-25 14:37:54

The problem is that some half-wit has decided that synthetic casings are the way forward. They are utterly disgusting (I did read about the reason why but have forgotten - probably someone had a hissy fit about the word "intestines"!!!). I think that just grabbing a packet of Cumberland or Lincolnshire bangers, one now has to waste time reading the flipping label.

I agree, Tesco does a very tasty range.

Sainsbury' s range, which I also thought were called Finest but I maybe confused, are also good . The Cumberland ones are excellent. Black Farmer are good too. Our
butcher also makes gf ones.

I have found that most sausages are gf now.

Squiffy Sun 24-Aug-25 15:36:20

I need gf, too, and my go-to are these: Morrisons The Best Thick Pork & Caramelised Onion Sausages 400g (£2.50/each). They are tasty and you don’t need a pneumatic drill to cut through the skin!

OldFrill Sun 24-Aug-25 15:39:12

The thick skins are probably collagen or cellulose rather than intestine. I leave the skins if they are thick, dog doesn't object to them.

They are, as are Waitrose sausages.

Most better brands seem to be gluten-free now.

I haven't seen the Black Farmer brand for a while, we often used to buy them. They are good.

I like Co-op irresistible range they are GF, and they do loads of different flavours as well as plain and Cumberland.

Aldom Mon 25-Aug-25 09:51:45

I'm moving area soon and there's no Waitrose, the Co-op is the nearest supermarket. Thanks for the recommendation 62Granny. I will give the Irresistible range of sausages a try. smile
