Hello Sandye

Have ever heard of Panela. It is an unrefined brown sugar produced and consumed widely in Central and South America.

It is actually produced in blocks but you can buy it in a crystallized form in 500g bags in large supermarkets lin Spain like the Mercadona.

It is only about £1.20 for a bag and is really nice in coffee. Much dearer in the UK.

It has a much nice flavour than any UK brown sugar including Muscavado.

It is also commonly used for baking, biscuits.cakes etc.

Google it. Or try and get someone to bring you some from Spain.

Enjoy

Just an aside:
I buy sugar for the food bank when asked. Interesting that it is regularly cheaper in Savers, not known for food, than in all of the supermarkets

As a diabetic I dont use the brown sugar I am given in coffee shops. I just collected them all. Went to make a cake for a charity and thought I had some brown sugar in the cupboard but there was none left. As the shops were shut at the time, I collected all the little sugar sachets and emptied them all together. Most were brown sugar but one or two slightly different. however scraped enough to make the cake!!

Do you know anyone else near you who might be able to share a bulk buy from somewhere? Dont know if honey is much more expensive or if you might be able to use some of that to replace the sugar. Hope you are able to keep baking

Sorry, maybe I wasn't very clear.
I'm not sure Tesco etc do "bulk buy". I really meant, say, 25kg sacks.

We used to bulk buy lots of wholefood items this way - not sugar as we didn't use it - but other things - dates, rice, flour etc. Now only flour.
If you have space for a sack it might be worth looking at it.

Thank you all, I will be trying this. Unfortunately NotSpaghetti that is not an option for me. I live quite remote and we have Asda, Tesco an Morison,s no bulk buy, no fresh veg or fish shops

Or buy it in bulk which is probably cheaper?

Astitchintime

According to Nancy Birtwhistle ………

200 gr granulated sugar
25 gr black treacle
Warm in the microwave for 15 seconds and rub together. Once blended, store in a jar.

I’ve never tried this but will be doing so once it’s time for Christmas baking.

I mix sugar and molasses with remainder of ingredients.

No blending, no jars. Easy.

I like to bake so use a lot of brown sugar, having looked at it this morning the price is just getting out of my range. I know you can make your own brown sugar using sugar and molasses but all the recipes on the net are American. Anyone make there own and could tell me approx molasses to sugar ratio please?
