Am I a bit late starting if I make it later this week? I do a half recipe since really I am the only one eating it.

Sorry no. We just never eat heavy fruit cake so why do it over 'the festivities'.

Marmight Sun 16-Nov-25 14:46:20

No
I made one once about 18 years ago. It was a labour of love as my cake making abilities are practically zilch. It was, if I say so myself, a masterpiece. The only takers were my late husband and me. My family decided, to a wo/man, that they didn’t like fruit cake. Mind you I’m not that keen especially on the marzipan, but I did my bit. I think at least half went out for the birds some months later. It was quite alcoholic. Not sure if you’re supposed to feed them boozy cake but they seemed to like it 🤔

Had to be gluten free for DS, so made with ground almonds instead of flour. I don't like gluten free flour and xanthan gum, as it makes everything taste as though it has sand in it.

It has come out beautifully, but only about an inch and a half high, have to use double quantities next year!

Done it!
Had to supply my own brandy in the end as DS was not forthcoming with aa alternative.

It has had three hours in the oven; one more to go before I look. The house smells very good!

I love to make a Christmas cake. But last night the fan oven packed up. I’m quite new to electric ovens. I knew where I was with gas.☹️

We never really liked the marzipan or icing, so I used to brush it with warmed apricot jam, then arrange assorted nuts all over the top, brush with more warmed jam. Just tied a tartan ribbon around it. Though I say it myself it used to look very good - I was asked more than once where I’d bought it.

But much of it would still end up on the bird table, so I don’t even make my nutty one any more.

Yesterday I did a shop for all the wherewithal for both Delia’s mincemeat, 2 x GH 🎄puddings, and brandy butter. All that dried fruit , different sugars, oranges and lemons etc., plus ale for the puds, weighed a ton!

No prizes for guessing what I’ll be doing this weekend…

I've got my fruit soaking ready to make my cake. Use the Delia recipe every time.
I did consider not bothering this year ...... but knew I'd regret it!!!

Don't make a cake any more, but have just made my Christmas puddings today!

Madgran77 Mon 10-Nov-25 17:57:35

I realised last night that we are well into November so I'm just making a shopping list of ingredients. I'm using my mother in law's recipe, which has been our cake for the last 50years.

I used to make Delias cake but it never got eaten and I always seem to end up taking it into work where the staff demolished it. The only time I really enjoyed eating it was when I had a January baby, was breastfeeding and always hungry.

Just made made mine yesterday. I don’t eat it so have made it for my son in law and his parents.. I love making it and the smell is amazing

I make mine in September, feed it with brandy from time to time.

Allira Sun 09-Nov-25 16:20:48

LadyGaGa

Made mine this week from the Bero book. I’ve not made one for years but I used to always make one with this recipe. Buying all the ingredients cost as much as a small car 😂 I bought the cheapest small bottle of brandy to feed it, but when I got home I realised that it still had the security lid on (it was only £7!) I tried everything to prise it off - pliers, metal cutters, knitting needles - to no avail. Luckily it was a plastic bottle so I sawed the neck off. This cake better be worth it! 😂

I have a vision of Gangsta Granny sneaking a very small bottle of brandy out of the supermarket and scarpering fast when the alarms went off 😂

I make a Christmas cake with 2 jars of mincemeat with all the flour etc cherries ( if liked) and don’t make to about a week before Christmas , lovely and moist ,

Lahlah65 Sun 09-Nov-25 10:59:42

I meant to say, what will we do….

Ex dancer I Havnt heard the archers mention stir up Sunday yet, so there must be time.

What are you doing when Jill is no longer around to remind us to make our Christmas pudding? 😉

Lilyflower Sun 09-Nov-25 10:47:13

I don't make my cake early as we like a lighter one than the full blown molasses version. My cake won't keep so long so I do it Christmas week.

Witzend Sun 09-Nov-25 10:35:06

I stopped making them a few years ago - much of them would end up on the bird table. Christmas puddings, OTOH - with plenty of brandy butter…😋

smallday51 Sun 09-Nov-25 10:31:43

Me too?
