Chicken thighs - per person?

I don’t often use them, but was looking up traybake recipes earlier - virtually all stating 8 to serve 4 people.

Those I usually buy are pretty big and TBH I’ve usually used one each, obviously with plenty of potatoes/rice/other veg. I’m sure it’d be different if you had hulking great, permanently ravenous teen boys to feed, but is it odd to have just one each?

It’s not a question of economising, BTW, I just feel that one per grown adult is enough.

Sorry, wrong thread!!

Would you feel the same if it was your son in law wanting a third child and not your daughter?

Oreo

At least two, and if they aren’t large then three.

My kind of cook (& diner) flowers

Oh dear, I only serve one thigh per person. We do eat a lot of vegetables though.

Yes, I'm veggie too and would only give my husabnd one... maybe I should give him more shock

Although I should 😁

Reminder to self, put them on the list for Waitrose this week.

Bear in mind that in the UK, two-thirds of adults are overweight or obese. Perhaps portion size is not something that we get right every time..? I would have said two bone-in thighs per person but before Christmas I bought some boneless ones from Waitrose that were enormous - one would have been plenty.

OK, as a vegetarian I may not be the best judge (the Waitrose ones were not for me but for my carnivorous family).

Older ladies will eat less, men more it all depends what else you are offering but if you offer 2 each there will be plenty and use the rest up next day.

I’ll be having two tonight, same as my husband and son!

I buy a pack of 4 for the 2 of us. I cook them all and see how we go. Anything left goes in sandwiches the next day!

Greenfinch Wed 14-Jan-26 13:29:08

My SiL was cooking us a vegetable curry over the Christmas period. Eighteen year old grandson who doesn’t like vegetables (!) requested chicken and so I bought a packet of four thighs and left it with SiL expecting him to take out one or two ( he was having it with rice). He cooked all 4 and grandson was quite happy to eat all four: two for dinner and two for tea. So yes, although not eating it myself, I would allow two for everyone. They do seem rather large though.

I do 2 each & I have about 1 & a half & give the extra chicken to DH, who would be saying a minimum of 3 each of he was on here.
They do vary in a lot size & probably the slower growing ones will be bigger.

twiglet77 Wed 14-Jan-26 13:17:28

I’d have two.

I think if in doubt of how many to serve, it’s fine to just have one if that’s what suits you but for guests err on the generous side.
I have been served with one at a friend’s house and was as hungry afterwards as I had been before, and it sure wasn’t down to lack of money on her part, just not being very thoughtful.

I often put them in a tray bake with all sorts of vegetables such as mushrooms, leeks, red onions, chopped up sweet potato, ordinary potato, peppers, courgettes and tomatoes. We find one each is ample.

Fartooold Wed 14-Jan-26 12:57:25

I am with Witzend I serve up one each, from Waitrose, if I am feeling generous I wrap them in bacon! We do eat loads of vegetables.

My 7 and 10 year old grandson polish off two or more each when I give them homemade chicken nuggets

Alwaysoptumistic Wed 14-Jan-26 12:32:05

I think one is ample if you’re having it with vegetables and potatoes or rice. It then leaves room for a nice dessert 😁

Jaxjacky Wed 14-Jan-26 12:31:44

We’re having those tonight in bbq sauce, two each.

Witzend Wed 14-Jan-26 12:30:55

Mine were from Waitrose - higher welfare, slower growing - maybe that accounts for it.

HowVeryDareYou2 Wed 14-Jan-26 12:29:40

At least 2 each

kittylester Wed 14-Jan-26 12:26:33

I work on 2 each. I buy mine from the butcher but I have noticed that Waitrose thighs are much bigger and, if I've had to buy those, I would probably do 3 between 2. The meat is much meatier.
