Absolutely love blood oranges for eating but seldom see them in the supermarkets. Does anyone know what time of year they become available?

Try using blood oranges when they appear - my most delicious marmalade!

I got mine in our local deli which has a small stock of fruit & vegetables. They were Seville oranges, and full of pips, but much bigger than usual. I bought the usual weight for 2 lots that I usually get and cut them up for freezing. The skins were thicker than usual too, with more pith. As I don't make marmalade until the summer, when it doesn't steam up the kitchen, I won't know if they are going to do the job until then. Was it a bad harvest, perhaps because of the heat last summer, I wonder?

Yes! Ocado ones delivered this week now in 18 jars of marmalade.

I use Mamade too - three quarters of the sugar and the addition of two finely chopped and pre-softened lemons makes a really delicious and not too sweet marmalade at any time of year. Much less effort!

I found 2x2kg bags in Morrisons - the last 2 until more come in.

I do use Mamade but don’t find it has the same ‘tang’ as fresh oranges. Maybe I should cut down the sugar?

I’m hoping to get more Sevilles - my ideal year is when I have a jar for every week but rarely achieve that 🫤

I might try MaMade if we run out - thanks for the suggestions. I always make mine very tart - more like a spread as you don’t get a ‘solid’ set using less sugar. I’ve found a great recipe using a pressure cooker - you cook the oranges whole for 10 mins. Definitely worth looking it up if you have one…

I use MaMade also.

Lot less work, and can make batches throughout the year instead of a marathon in January.

(Yes, I know I could freeze the Sevilles.)

I find though that if I used the amount of sugar the recipe says, it would be far too sweet for us, so I cut down on that.

Thank you everyone. I found some in Sainsbury’s - a bit of a trek but I used their ‘stock checker’ on line. They actually had some so the kitchen is already smelling wonderful!

Waitrose usually have them. And it appears Waitrose online has them

A lady at the checkout in Tesco last week had some boxes like this of marmalade oranges. We commented on her being busy.
A link shows the packs, but says they are out of stock so maybe she was lucky to get hers early. www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/253557103?srsltid=AfmBOop3Pq8cvSUA_Qf1f2j9imOUpoZkJIprwcStp5FFgN-IX9nYDu8b

Dotty, have you tried Ma Made? Saves a lot of work ! It may not be to your taste but I like it . Can substitute some of the water with whisky. My friend introduced me to it. I am down to my last few jars but have a tin of Ma Made ready and waiting.

Has anyone found Seville oranges in the supermarkets yet? I ordered some on line from Morrisons yesterday but they have now said ‘unavailable’ and substituted Navel oranges - delicious but not what I wanted for making marmalade!
