My friend knows I love crab so brought me a tine of crab this week when she visited. I noticed when she had gone that the date says BBE: July 2025. Would you eat it. I know I can open it and smell it and that will give me an idea, but what do you think?

icanhandthemback Fri 23-Jan-26 10:38:13

If it is a BBE date, it just means that it will probably taste better by the end of 2025 but would hardly have changed much less than a 12th of year after. A Use By Date means you are really better off eating it by that date although I don't believe it goes off on the stroke of midnight so use taste and smell to make that decision. As a society we throw away a lot of food that is still ok to eat and it is such a waste. I am currently eating Quark dated 17th December and it is fine. I am living to tell the tale. Think how many tubs would have been thrown away the day after the date ended when they would have been fine.

I would not risk it.

I paid £20 for a tub of Brixham white crab meat which is quite expensive although we did get 4 delicious meals out of it. That was from Clifton Fisheries in Bristol. You can, however, order online and have it sent to you from Beer fisheries in Devon run by the Newton family. They also have a good range of other sea food to order at the same time. In East Anglia Cromer crab is well known and I had some delicious Yorkshire crab from a stall at my local farmers market. No need to eat tinned crab meat in date or not.

Indeed you can I know it well I live not far from there. Less than 30 minutes in the car.

You have made me feel so pleased that we can get fresh crab caught locally and it is yummy!

Not work the risk....especially for your cat!!!

What a tease you are telling me about that lovely crab you enjoyed. You have made me very envious as it all sound wonderful

Tinned crab is nowhere near as nice as fresh crab. I bought fresh white meat crab last week from Brixham via my fish monger. It was delicious - as sweet as a nut. I had it in a malted bread salad sandwich with skinny chips. Then I had the rest in a grapefruit, avocado and watercress salad served with Dauphinois potatoes.

Personally I wouldn’t eat the tinned crab unless I disguised it with linguine and ginger but I taste buds apart I think it is perfectly safe to eat. BBE just means best before so it will not harm you. If it said use by then seriously consider chucking it.

Dempie55

Give it to the cat.

I definitely would if I had one, my neighbour has one who will ha ve it if I don't want to eat it over the weekend. 🤣

Thank you so much e eryone who has contributed to this thread. I did not have it today and will not be having it tomorrow either as I am out for lunch, probably open it during the weekend and let you know what it is like.
As Nanny100 says I might be disappointed as it is probably nothing the fresh crab I usually eat and love. We will see. smile

M0nica Wed 21-Jan-26 18:47:45

TTotally risk free

knspol Wed 21-Jan-26 16:40:35

Not worth trying just in case, too much of a risk.

Astitchintime Wed 21-Jan-26 16:36:28

No, I would definitely not be eating it, in date or out of date! 😝🤮

Etoile2701 Wed 21-Jan-26 16:25:55

It is probably fine but I would be a bit careful as seafood can be risky.

N4nna Wed 21-Jan-26 15:46:10

BBE best before end - so yes okay to eat as long as tin isn’t damaged. Use by - definitely do not eat.

AuntieE Wed 21-Jan-26 15:41:26

Personally, I would not risk it, even although it probably is safe to eat.

Kats2 Wed 21-Jan-26 14:59:16

Just a thought..but, if you think about it the Crab has actually been cooked..I have a tub of COSCO crab in my fridge that I bought in December..it’s got a b.b. date 6 JAN 2027.. so a year but it does say eat within 2 days of opening which I always ignore..

Mojack26 Wed 21-Jan-26 14:03:24

I think it will be fine as it's in a tin. Open it and see, nothing to lose... My dad said during WW2 they were given tins of 'bully beef'...aka corned beef left over from WW1 and dad lived to nearly 94 with all his faculties! He hated corned beef, he never ate it after the war he said....I wonder why?...🤣 point is he survived 20+ years of food in a tin basically because it was sealed and no oxygen got in...

Grantanow Wed 21-Jan-26 14:00:57

Tins don't last forever. Personally, I'd bin crab if it's past the use by date and also the best before date. Cautious, I know, but safer.

Nanny100 Wed 21-Jan-26 13:51:27

Like the others have said, being in a tin, it’ll probably be fine.
Speaking as someone who adores crab, I find tinned crab nothing like fresh crab. Not unpleasant, just not anything like crab.
Sainsbury’s and Tesco sell fresh crab with a long shelf life in the chiller cabinet, I think it’s called “Good Tide” That’s nice.
Crab would be my “condemned man’s last meal”!

If it is a proper tin I wouldn’t worry. If it is a jar or similar I would chuck it.

It is a proper tin, I shall try it on Sunday, thank you all for your help and suggestions. I will let you know after the weekend if I am still alive!! smile

Wouldn’t because whilst it may well be safe it probably wouldn’t taste great.
Nip into Home bargains, buy yourself a new tin and enjoy.

We have not got a home bargain as yet but will have by the summer apparently it will be very well received and very useful for us all I will definitely use it.
