My culinary attempt this afternoon was a tarte au citron, that's six lemons and six eggs. The filling mixture has gone quite dark, even tarte Γ  l'orange looking! Any ideas why? I've sprinkled loads of icing sugar to tone it down, but I'm a bit worried I come to serve it?
I was expecting the second picture.

My weekly treat from M&S. Yours looks as good.

Maremia Sun 22-Feb-26 17:23:23

How does it taste?

MartavTaurus Sun 22-Feb-26 17:31:11

I licked the bowl, it tasted very lemony - sharp. I didn't overcook it, but it turned dark.

I think it looks fine, and would love a slice. X

Save some for me! You might ask how does the one in the photo look so yellow.

Shelflife Sun 22-Feb-26 18:03:23

I can see the comparison, but I wouldn't worry . If it tastes good that's ok. You could decorate with drizzle of yellow icing or candid lemon slices- although that may need a trip to the supermarket ! Good luck .

It looks yummy! I do love anything lemony! I wouldn’t waste a moment’s angst over the colour.

Witzend Sun 22-Feb-26 18:12:23

PS, did the eggs have very orangey yolks, rather than yellowy? That could perhaps account for it.

It's homemade better than anything shop bought and photo enhanced just enjoy.

Maybe bake it for less next time or reduce the oven temperature a little. Every oven is different sometimes tweaking a recipe is the solution.

I frequently make Auntie Flo's (bless her) lemon surprise pudding it's totally delicious.

It's not how it looks that counts but the taste. My baking doesn't look like it did because I have learnt to take short cuts due to disability. Last week made marbled Madeira cake with milk chocolate and white chocolate chips in it for my craft group. Friends called it cow cake . I always make 2 one gluten free. A friend daughter's are gluten free my cake isn't pretty but they love it as they say it tastes better than any other cake they can get.

I use my own recipes for both sorts of baking . Plus anyone looking at my dinners wouldn't want to try it . But friends who come for meals love it again not pretty but tasty and always have seconds . My brother has thirds he loves meat. It's veggie through necessarity because stopped eating meat 6 years ago as could only have it stew but choked on it , stopped using chicken same reason .. I cook enough for 6 dinners using plenty of veg pulses and Quorn sausages, chicken pieces or mince . Only had fish when out but gave that up now and because I choked on it.

I make marmalade, jams and chutney but my way . Especially my chutney aren't thick but tasty no chilli . Again everything made my way .

Home made never looks like the pictures in books . Years ago I saw a programme about a food photographer who said half the time the food was touched up with food colouring and some of it was raw but painted to look cooked and some of it wasn't real .

I would rather eat your tarte au citron than the bright yellow one because you made it from scratch . πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹

Thank you for the compliments everyone!
Yes, I too think that cookery photographs must get a make over to enhance the colours.

The tarte was much appreciated. I found it very sharp - 8 lemons - but I stuck exactly to the recipe, the whipping of the mixture on the heat was tricky. Sorry I couldn't send you all a slice!

Keep baking!

Possibly.

JackyB Wed 25-Feb-26 08:33:47

I think it still looks as though it falls within the spectrum of lemon colours.

Esmay Wed 25-Feb-26 08:40:23

It looks delicious.
The important thing is the taste .
I wonder if you used very good quality free range eggs .
The photo was almost certainly retouched .
Just decorate it when serving and don't apologise !

I think it looks terrible not at all how it should look….send it to me this instant to dispose of! 😁

Yes, I was going to ask that too. It could be the reason.

We could test it for you perhaps?

Moving country this week from πŸ‡«πŸ‡· la tarte au citron, this week's offering is πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ a Bienenstichkucken. I'll leave you to work that one out! If you hurry down to Devon you might be lucky, but the DGC will be round soon!
Thanks to Jacky B for some extra inspiration behind the scenes! I'll try the lamb mould one next.

MartavTaurus Wed 04-Mar-26 13:33:48

I've put together a clue to help you!

Allira Wed 04-Mar-26 22:35:24

Did you make it from scratch? 😲

MartavTaurus Thu 05-Mar-26 08:32:32

Allira

Did you make it from scratch? 😲

Yes, of course!
The cake part is made like a dough, it tastes sort of like brioche. The cream is double, plus butter icing. The honeyed almonds are yummy. Quite a challenge!
I ate two slices yesterday, how many calories?? πŸ™Š

Allira Thu 05-Mar-26 15:30:19

Well, all that energy in making it needed making up again!
