Scotts porridge oat old fashioned for me i like the larger oat texture. Have it 2 or 3 times a week. Taste is just as I remember it. My sisters son ate it cold uncooked with salt YUK! His father had Scottish ancestry!

I can eat it cold , just oats and cold milk, have it quite often !

Thanks for the ideas everyone. However it seems no one else seems to be aware of the distinctive smell we remember but think is now missing 🤷‍♀️

Another vote here for Aldi's organic porridge oats. Cooked in the microwave with semi-skimmed milk and some seeds (pumpkin & sunflower) and dried fruits (dates, prunes, cranberries). Then served with fresh blueberries & home-made kefir. (Or plain yogurt.) No sugar or honey! Delicious!

I have porridge regularly, to keep the calories low 1 use water, cooked for 2 mins in the microwave and a little salt and milk on top.
I don't have a sweet tooth and my sense of smell went with Covid, calories are much lower than a similar bowl of granola or muesli that I would have otherwise. Cheap supermarket oats, salt is much better than you expect.

I like the idea of the Biscoff spread. Must buy a jar. I usually top with Greek yoghurt and/or a banana.Tasty enough.

We use water not milk to cook oats very slowly. If I remember correctly, I soak them over night and it becomes very creamy. Always with honey and yoghurt and any fruit knocking around.

I think the taste, smell and texture improve with longer cooking time. I can't remember a distinct taste of smell but I was always fascinated by the way it seemed to magically come away from the side of the pan.

The change you have noticed might be due more to the difference in milk these days, or the ratio of milk to water.

Quaker Oats has a distinctive smell to me, but more of hot puddings than porridge.

We used to have ‘Quaker oat pudding’ when I was little.

We now use Tesco Scottish Oats as they are quite a bit cheaper.

I like the smell, texture and taste of both the Sco**'s one and also the M & S one which is a great bargain.

I've recently discovered mixing a small spoon of Biscoff spread makes it lovely and creamy and just the right sweetness mmmmm

I have porridge most mornings. I think our taste and smell deteriorates as we get older so may not smell as good.

We use organic oats, a 1kg packet from Aldi is £2.25.

I use Whites Speedicook , which is produced 5 miles up the road from me
Made with water , chopped up banana stirred in
3 mins in the microwave
A dollop of natural yogurt to help cool
Yum yum

I have porridge too, about three times a week.
I make it with oat milk to reduce my dairy intake (which doesn't suit me) so double oats! I cook in a pan for 6 minutes. I eat it with either fruit, nuts and seeds.

I don't stick to a particular brand but buy any that's on offer. I prefer the cardboard box or paper packaging.

Recently I bought some organic oats from a local shop, but realised later that it was plastic packaging! So not that good for the planet!

I can't say I've noticed a big difference in the flavour of any brand...

I’m with Sago. You can’t beat Scott’s. I like a sprinkling of extra oat bran too for a bit of extra flavour.

I love porridge.
I tend to use Flahavan's organic oats - either porridge or jumbo.
I think they both smell like porridge.
The porridge variety won a taste awards I noticed the other day.

We buy whole Scott’s Porridge Oats and only use whole milk.

We make it in a Thermomix and although I don’t eat porridge, I have my oats in yoghurt, my husband and family say it is the best porridge ever.

It takes about 11 minutes, when it’s ready I can smell the oats.
