Tonight we had our first English asparagus, it was enjoyed with salmon, home made hollandaise sauce, new potatoes and salad.

It was so delicious and worth every penny, Boston new potatoes would have been better but not in season yet so we made do with Majorcan.

I love summer food!

I am drooling. I was envisaging just the meal you ate this weekend and deciding that it would be that 'last meal' for me.

When I lived in east Kent, the farm shop sold odd shape and size asparagus (from their own fields) called “sprue”. We were able to eat some almost every day, without breaking the bank.
It was sooooo good. Nothing like English asparagus’

I only buy English asparagus, I absolutely love it, worth every penny.

The South American asparagus is tasteless string…

I live in an asparagus growing area and can buy direct from the grower. There's nothing like freshly picked asparagus, lightly steamed and served with good butter or a home made hollandaise. Yes, it's worth the price and like many of our home produced fruit and veg, it's always best when bought locally and in season.

Ooh yum Asparagus and Jersey Royals when in season. 😋

Ooh thanks for the reminder
Asparagus and Jersey Royals will be added to my shopping list this week.

We used to live in Shropshire, asparagus grew all around us, our youngest then 2 used to have steamed asparagus spears and dip them in soft boiled egg.
I wasn’t paying the equivalent of £5 a bunch!

Yes, it is worth it! I'll look to see if M&S have Herefordshire asparagus yet!

That's the perfect way to eat asparagus in my opinion!

Yes, worth whatever the cost.

We made delicious asparagus, mushroom risotto Saturday.

I used to get it at our local “Pick your own “ farm - as well as different grades, thicknesses, etc they sold what they called “soup asparagus” ie mis-shapes, spindly, broken etc. cheap as chips and perfectly fit for purpose (frequently good enough to serve in fact)

BTW We too salmon, new potatoes and asparagus with watercress sauce at a friend’s where I went for lunch at the weekend.
Match made in heaven, isn’t it?

Obviously not in the same league as the delicious meal that Sago enjoyed, but I can recommend asparagus cup-a-soup for that unique asparagus flavour when soup is enough. A chunk of tiger bread with salted butter goes a treat 😋.

We're very fortunate to have a good friend who grows asparagus on the family farm down the road. She turned up for coffee the other day, bearing a present of three large bunches, cut that morning. She'll be back soon with more...(fingers crossed).

That sounds lovely. I love asparagus, but very rarely have it as I'm the only one in the family who likes it, so I can never justify buying it just for myself.

Jaxjacky Tue 21-Apr-26 12:32:47

I really don’t like it much and wouldn’t choose it, I like the majority of other veg though, love sprouts!

English Asparagus. 😋
We especially like one from Cornwall called St Endonoc, but I don't think it leaves the county because it's bought up by the restaurants.

I like asparagus and soft egg as a starter, drizzled with a vinaigrette.

We used to live in Worcestershire, famous for asparagus which we ate as often as possible in the season.

Decades later, in Scotland, a guest rang to book at our island BB and I said "oh, I recognise that address; it's the asparagus farm!" he said yes, it was his farm.
Weeks later when he arrived for his holiday, he brought us a gift; an entire tray of freshly cut asparagus. Wonderful !

boggle... what more perfect justification could there be for buying it just for you and eating the lot.
