Harris27 Within a group I go out with are about 3 I know of who shop at Iceland saying it's really cheap. I visited a store and was shocked at the price of a lot of basics eg eggs, bread, milk, cheese as well as a lot of standard items. With the hidden cost for picking and packing for me Iceland is a non-starter. Perhaps if shopping only frozen foods they may be a winner.
I’m an avid fan of Iceland who delivery great and don’t charge if the order is over £40. They are excellent.
Iceland say they don't charge for delivery, but instead they charge for picking and packing which most other supermarkets include in their delivery charge. So no difference really and in fact I think Iceland is a bit of a con, saying no delivery charge and then hitting you with the picking/packing fee when you get to the checkout. So sorry but I'm not a fan
When our dog was alive we ordered some value boneless frozen chicken. What arrived was Tesco finest at value price. We went into store and purchased the value one and ate the finest ourselves.
I once had Finest potatoes substituted with a bag of onions. Years ago when Tesco sold lots of things online, I ordered a rotary washing line and a massive pack of pampers turned up
Amongst other things I ordered a bottle of good red wine. It arrived plus another I hadn’t ordered, a bottle of own brand red wine. That was all the detail on the label, no grape variety, no country of origin, etc. Must have been part of someone else’s order? I didn’t notice in time to hand it back to the driver.
You can guess what it was like…2 mouthfuls and it was down the sink! I wouldn’t even have cooked with it.
The first Easter of lockdown, feeling very glum and isolated I had ordered a bottle of pink Prosecco with my Waitrose order. Sadly substituted as they had run out.
Not so sadly though - they sent a bottle of their pink brut champagne in its place! (At about £20 more but of course they honoured the original price! )
I once ordered prawn curry ready meal. This was substituted with unpeeled prawns. My friend recently ordered microwave rice and got a bag of parsnips instead!
My best supermarket substitution was in France. I was so pleased with myself to have successfully ordered a large delivery from local Carrefour as we had family staying. I had ordered chicken breasts for the kids and they substituted with a whole tray of quail! Needless to say, our GCs took one look a these little birds and refused to eat for days!
I ordered veggie sausages and got a tin of meat. Ive also ordered toilet rolls and got five packs of aloe vera tissues- the kind you'd put in your handbag.
I know substitution choices have improved over the years (sorry, no milk, but here's a bottle of dettol) - but I've been looking forward to some gazpacho soup. Croutons made and ready, garnishes chopped and in the fridge - yum.
But instead, I'm getting a carton of blood orange juice. I just can't see the red onion, peppers and cucumber floating on the top giving quite the same experience.
