Can’t seem to find these any where well not Sainsbury’s or Aldi
Anyone know why??
I’m not a big fan of apples but just wanted to vary my diet a bit and remembered I used to like these and golden russet.

Tried Gala, Pink lady and golden delicious all rather tasteless perhaps it’s me……☹️

Jazz apples are the best, small, crisp, juicy and sweet.

DH likes them, but they are out of season in both hemispheres at the moment. He has Braeburns which are coming from NZ, and are very tasty, but this year they have been small.
I found a UK apple called Magic Star which is tasty, very similar and bigger - now his favourite.
We are lucky to have an orchard not far away that does so many different varieties but they have suffered from the long dry spell

I agree! No decent apples anywhere. Supermarkets just sell imported mush!
I know it’s difficult to get COXs out of season but there must be other UK brands?

Yes I agree- all bland!

Fuji apples are my favourite. Can't find them anywhere now (apart from when I go to Lanzarote)

Are they tangy?

Thanks everyone going to try different varieties as and when they come in. Oh I’m so adventurous 🤣🤣

The only Coxes that I've been able to buy for the last few years have. been really tiny and hardly worth eating. We tend to buy Pink Ladies now, apparently they were specifically bred to be more nutritious though I don't like them so much myself.

I grow plums on dwarfing rootstocks in a big pot as I don't have a garden now. They took a couple of years to fruit but have been great this year. I also grow damsons as you don't seem to be able to buy them at all now, fresh or tinned. At my last house I grew them against a wall, keeping the small tree to a "pickable" size and had great crops.
I agree that the bought plums are all pretty tasteless.

.

I really really miss not being able to buy British Victoria Plums when in season.
I love them when they're fully matured and the juice rolls down your chin (napkin a necessity!!)!

The black ones (often from Spain) are always hard and tasteless.

If I spot a tree in someone's garden I'll have to go scrumping!!

Its a bit early for British apples; in about three weeks time there should be 'Discovery' and 'Fiesta' apples available and then 'Worcester Pearmain'. Currently apples in supermarkets will be imported ones. Pink Lady apples and Cripp's Pink apples are the same variety - if they are large and well coloured they are sold as Pink Lady - smaller ones and with less colouring they are sold as Cripp's Pink.

I find a lot of the apples out recently are tasteless

I love cox apples

I’ve never been a fan of Cox apples, all the ones I have had are soggy and a bit tasteless. My favourite variety is Jazz which have never let me down. I can get English ones in season.

Please can anyone tell me whether it's still possible to by Discovery apples? Small and sweet and completely delicious. Haven't seen them for years.

labazs Sat 25-Jul-26 14:29:32

Is there a farm shop near you? That is where I get mine from and they are lovely

Mainwin Sat 25-Jul-26 14:27:18

I love Russet apples. They usually start to appear late September.

Vintagegirl Sat 25-Jul-26 14:26:00

Cox's apples have a short season as at there best when first picked, do not store well.

Essexgirl145 Sat 25-Jul-26 13:55:39

Harvest is'nt until the Autumn, you'll have to wait a while and the season is short.

JenniRen Thu 23-Jul-26 22:07:47

You are correct, valdali.
They are the same, Cox is just a shortened version of Cox's Orange Pippin.

We tried to grow a tree in our garden but it didn't thrive for some reason.

Pink lady much better if kept for a few weeks before eating. I don't think a Cox is the same thing as a Cox's Orange Pippin. The latter were small and misshapen and utterly delicious. The Cox is a near relative with a lot of the flavour bred out if it (IMHO, just guessing).

I think that you’re right. The Cox’s nowadays taste nothing like they used to, but they aren’t Cox’s Orange Pippins.

I always thought Cox (& Mum has some in her orchard, & I've been on apple-picking jobs on apple farms) were the same as Cox's orange pippln. Usually (even back in the 60's) just referred to as Cox's.

I could be wrong, haven't asked AI...

Brogdale can identify apple varieties but it costs £30 if anyone has a tree they wish to identify.

I’m not a fan of Cox apples but they were the only apples my father would eat - he said you had to hear the pips rattle to know they were ripe! I prefer Braeburns. You rarely see the wonderful Egremont russets these days. We’ve lost so many heritage apples.

I like a Braeburn. Quite tangy & similar to cox
I like them chopped up with Lancashire creamy cheese & grapes

Greyduster Thu 23-Jul-26 16:57:16

The estate that I live on is built on the site of an old farm. The builders retained much of one of the orchards as landscaping and the trees still exist and produce fruit that is available for anyone to either pick, or take as windfalls. It’s impossible to tell now what varieties they are for the most part, but I can tell you that you will never taste apples as good from any shop or supermarket and yes, there are russets, and one that has been identified as a Pitmaston Pineapple, and one with red skin and flesh called a Bloody Ploughman. Crab apples too.

I think they have bred all the flavour and character out of commercial apples in favour of the consistency of shape and size demanded by the supermarkets.
