Scottish Government Proposes Price Cap On Essential Foods

My huge concern here, much I as support the principle of this, is farmers.

It won’t be the retailers or the wholesalers who lose out, it’ll be the farmers and this could then ultimately affect our food supply as these “caps” could well push some small farmers out of business!

This will become a prime example of the rule of unintended consequences and is yet another example which proves that most politicians have no clue about farming.

All supermarkets stock budget ranges as well as their everyday and superior ranges of many foods.

Consumers will suffer from lack of choice, farmers will suffer and and may give up farming, forcing the import of cheap food from overseas. How does this help anyone? Or the economy?

It may, of course, be a cynical ploy as OldFrill says, in fact, the rule of intended consequences.

If the Scottish government found a cure for cancer there would be an uproar..they would be causing oncologists to lose their jobs or making big pharma bankrupt!
Honestly I am sick to death of the SNP bad stories .
Look at your own government pocketing cash from dubious people…and doing nothing for the citizens who voted for them.
Then maybe look at the facts.
SNP have worked for the people and no it’s not all unemployed or brain dead who voted for them for them.
We are just people who want control of our own country…like the other 60+ countries who celebrate their Independence from Westminster every year .
My only comment on this thread ,Deal with the mess Tories of both red and blue have and are making of government .Then you might have the right to talk down to us.

Spot on OldFrill

It has absolutely nothing to do with food.

Scotgov are drafting a bill which will be thwarted by UKgov as it contravenes the UK Internal Market Act. This promotes huge outcry from SNP and furthers their call for an independence referendum (that referendum is also NOW being drafted by the SNP who say they will have a referendum whether UKgov agree or not).

All a political game and a total waste of money.

Cap prices and farmers will simply stop growing that food stuff because it will cost them money to do so. Supermarkets will stop stocking that food stuff because it is not profitable to sell. Farmers will try instead to grow crops that are profitable, alternatively they will let their land lie fallow.

What about different types of food within the same heading? For example organic foodstuffs v non-organic. A wide spread price cap on all bread, or all chicken etc will kill the organic food sector. Even a price cap on the standard white loaf will be difficult to define. What about craft bakeries making standard loaves made with organic flour?

The solution suggested by the Scots is a lazy cop out. What they need to do is deal with poverty and its causes.

Not daft if you can't afford to buy food.

The poor farmers. Daft policy

It’ll be the farmers who pay the price, not the supermarkets.

Sadly true

Naturally, retailers are up in arms.

Oh, the poor wee lambs being taken to task for their price-gouging antics!

Well they can stop whining - they've had this coming since Liz Truss trashed the economy and the weekly shop went insane.
