Alf's Candies
John S Drivers.
Wade's Saddlery.

lemongrove I remember Brown, Muff's. My little son, then 7, and I used to go there for the very occasional treat of Morning Coffee.
He would have the money and order in a very grown-up way, for us.
We could have whatever cake we liked from the 3-tiered stand and the coffee came in silver service.
He had Horlicks and went to fetch me one of the selection of newspaper available for patrons to read as they relaxed.

They had a wonderful display in their 'magic window' during the Christmas season. Lovely memories.

Also gone now is Busby's on Manningham Lane. I still have a small plate with their 'Busby' logo on it.
The store was owned by the Busby family, whose son, Peter I once dated. Nicey chap.

One year, when there was a sudden, massive snowstorm during the day, Busby's opened their doors to hundreds of stranded workers and invited them to sleep in the store overnight.

I worked just down the road in Manor Row and sat up with dozens of others, in Busby's cafe.

Very exciting for a teenager from a strict home, to be able to stop out, innocently, all night grin

What a long, long queue there was for the ladies room in the morning.

Chewbacca When I was very small, Timothy Whites was 'Timothy White's and Taylors' Wonder what happened to Taylor?

As it was a chemist, I hate to think!!

I seem to be remembering the advertising jingles...

EllanVannin ... 'John Collier, John Collier, the window to watch."
JoyBloggs 'This is luxury, you can afford, by Cyril Lord'.

...these have dredged up from the recesses of my memory !

Patrick Thompsons
Goldbergs
Binns
department stores in Edinburgh.
Also Casey's sweet shop, where I went some days after school. I remember all the old-fashioned sweetie jars on the shelf and the penny tray and the tuppeny tray. Loved that shop, happy memories- sigh.

Ah but Binns was Maules, I'm told, originally. Now even Fraser's has gone and that building is being converted into, guess what? another hotel.
