Legs55 - as a teenager I used to spend all my summer holidays in Haselbury Plucknett with a friend who lived there. Have always wanted to go back and see it. Happy days!

Following on from your post Diggindoris, another couple French names, in Sussex "Herstmonceux" so near Battle, I really like to think of them bowling over from Normandy and naming it there and then, well after they'd got the battle out of the way. Also in Sussex "Hurstpierpoint"

In Essex just down the road from where my husband comes from "Theydon Bois" the Bois has evolved into "Boys" over the centuries, but I still say Bois to which my husband tells me "that's wrong" and I just retaliate "no you're wrong" and on and on we go, till one of us gets fed up grin "Hainault" nearby which happily remains Hainault or possibly 'aynort, if like my late father in law "Hs" are there to be dropped grin

We live in Northern Ireland and travel south to West Cork every summer. On the way we pass signs for Borris in Ossary and Horse and Jockey! Before the motorway, on the way to Dublin we would pass Termafeckin.

Diggind- funny when English towns have names which say the same twice, representing different invading groups- like Houghton-on-the-Hill (High town (french) on the hill)

Purplepoppies Tue 11-Jun-19 12:57:03

Upper Dicker and Lower Dicker, The Dicker... Hailsham.

Brilliant names?
So much sadness and hard times for so many, wanted something to make people smile and perhaps a little chuckle?

Diggingdoris Tue 11-Jun-19 12:54:46

My next village is Layer de la Haye. Not many French names in UK.
