Friday's Maths Brain Teasers ? ❓

Katie, this is an old Friday's puzzle. 3rd April.
The answer is given at the end of every day.

The thing is this: nowhere does it say you have to add in the total for the previous line. This part of the equation is absent, and we have to just guess it.

So my solution was calculated using a different 'absent' part, as follows:

1+4=5 became 1+1x4=5
2+5=12 became 2+2x5=12
3+6=21 became 3+3x6=21

You get my drift?

So it followed (well, for me of little brain that is) that:

8+11 became 8+8x11= 96

Not a sequence at all, but an additional element in the equation, just as the 'correct' answer has an additional element.

Right, I'll sit back down now Miss

If I had wanted the answer 96, I would have asked for the eighth term of the sequence.

Also I would have expected posters to state the equation for the n term, but I didn't.
It was meant to be simple, so that everyone could have a go. Phew! My brain hurts. ?

40 for me

I've argued with Miss but all to no avail willa.

I made it 40 then thought it was too easy so looked for the 'catch' and thought I'd found it, answer 96.

If we argue any more we'll get sent to bed without supper, which doesn't sound like a bad idea at all.

there is a gap not their sorry

As Calistemon pointed out, those of us who came up with 96 might have overthought the problem when we (industriously) completed the gap between rows 3 and 8 (nos. in the first column).....or were we exercising due diligence?

Initially, I came up with 21+19 = 40 but soon concluded that it was the wrong answer, because their is a gap with missing numbers in the first column.
Can an argument be made that the first column is missing four rows (4, 5, 6 and 7)? Wouldn't those also have to be completed in order to come up with the true value for row 8?
