We loved cumulative rhymes both as children, parents and grandparents

This is the house that Jack built.
This is the malt that lay in the house that Jack built.

This is the rat that ate the malt,
That lay in the house that Jack built.

This is the cat that killed the rat,
That ate the malt that lay in the house that Jack built.

This is the dog that worried the cat,
That killed the rat that ate the malt,
That lay in the house that Jack built.

This is the cow with the crumpled horn,
That tossed the dog that worried the cat,
That killed the rat that ate the malt,
That lay in the house that Jack built.

This is the maiden all forlorn,
That milked the cow with the crumpled horn,
That tossed the dog that worried the cat,
That killed the rat that ate the malt,
That lay in the house that Jack built.

This is the man all tattered and torn,
That kissed the maiden all forlorn,
That milked the cow with the crumpled horn,
That tossed the dog that worried the cat,
That killed the rat that ate the malt,
That lay in the house that Jack built.

This is the priest all shaven and shorn,
That married the man all tattered and torn,
That kissed the maiden all forlorn,
That milked the cow with the crumpled horn,
That tossed the dog that worried the cat,
That killed the rat that ate the malt,
That lay in the house that Jack built.

This is the cock that crowed in the morn,
That wakened the priest all shaven and shorn,
That married the man all tattered and torn,
That kissed the maiden all forlorn,
That milked the cow with the crumpled horn,
That tossed the dog that worried the cat,
That killed the rat that ate the malt,
That lay in the house that Jack built.

This is the farmer sowing his corn,
That fed the cock that crowed in the morn,
That wakened the priest all shaven and shorn,
That married the man all tattered and torn,
That kissed the maiden all forlorn,
That milked the cow with the crumpled horn,
That tossed the dog that worried the cat,
That killed the rat that ate the malt,
That lay in the house that Jack built.

And don’t get me started on The ladies of the harem of the court of King Caractacus, just passing by, or the strategies used to make the pig jump over the stile!

SachaMac Sun 05-Mar-23 14:33:54

There was a crooked man
And he walked a crooked mile
He found crooked sixpence
Upon a crooked stile
He bought a crooked cat
Which caught a crooked mouse
And they all lived together
In a crooked little house

'Auntie Mary had a canary
Up the leg of her drawers.
It wouldn't come down for half a crown
And I don't know any more'.

I don't think it's exactly a nursery rhyme but I do remember my grandma singing it to me .

She was of Irish decent and also sang things like, 'Delaney had a donkey' and 'What a wonderful motorcar' Val Donican did an album of these and similar. I wish I could find it again for my grandson.

Three Little Kittens
Lost their mittens
And they began to cry
Oh Mother dear, we sadly fear
Our mittens we have lost
What! Lost your mittens
You naughty kittens
Then you shall have no pie

Sparklefizz Mon 27-Feb-23 09:28:11

Apparently as a toddler I always used to cry at

Three little kittens, they lost their mittens
And they began to cry
Oh mother dear, we very much fear
That we have lost our mittens.

Lost your mittens?
You naughty kittens
Then you shall have no pie.

When my brother was little he used to ask for “Home did chot”. That is, “Up Jack got and home did trot”, the second verse of Jack and Jill.

I always liked

I had a little nut tree
And nothing would it bear
But a silver nutmeg
And a golden pear.

The King of Spain’s daughter
Came to visit me,
And all for the sake
Of my little nut tree.
