My wife has pet names for the whole family. Is this common amongst Grandmas?

Smileless2012 Thu 14-Apr-22 18:20:34

Neither would I CanadianGran I've always thought as pet names as a term of endearment, not to be used as an insult.

I don't really, but sometimes call Gdaughter Little Missy.

But it sounds like your wife has nicknames for others that they don't appreciate, and she hasn't stopped when they hinted that she does.

Perhaps you need to talk to her and remind her to use the GC's proper names. I would never call someone by a name that they don't like.

My ex husband used to call me ‘pet’ as we were in the era of Petula Clarke a lot of his friends thought it was my name and all called me ‘pet’ too ??

I've always had pet names for our boys and Mr. S. He has a pet name for me and DS has one for me too.

One for me which I didn't like - when we had a small boat he called it Wenchy Woo
Eldest son - John the Pon
Younger son - Graham Bear. He never liked it.
Eldest daughter - Lamb. Private reason.
Younger daughter - The Gills are alive.
What did we call him? He wanted "The Boss" but Im afraid he was Outnumbered.

Not the family, but we have got nicknames for some of the neighbours -
Father Ted (white hair) and his wife Rusty (her hair colour)
Mr Muscle (bodybuilder)
The Reverand (he's not a vicar, he revs his damned motorbike for ages)
The Mole (very nosey woman)
Braggy Bill (boasts about everything)
Mrs Korma (she keeps chickens)

We have names for neighbours especially ones we don’t like. My little grandchildren call me naughty nanny because I don’t always let them have their own way. I love it they take notice to me but run rings around their parents.

As children we gave people rather horrid nicknames. One of my brothers still gets mad if anybody mentions his grin

FannyCornforth Thu 14-Apr-22 12:51:48

There was a really good thread about neighbours nicknames a while back smile

Dh and i have nicknames for neighbours and people we see on a regular basis around car boots.
We laugh when we see them.

We call my brother and his family the Clampets from the Beverly Hillbillies, for the way they live and the chaos in their house.

I also have a pet name for my DGS, but it's private.

I have pet names for a couple of friends. One of whom guessed hers and was hugely insulted. Ooops

ginny Sat 18-Dec-21 15:40:33

Should have said I wouldn’t want to be called Nana by my own children or Husband , other than when they are talking to the Grandchildren.

ginny Sat 18-Dec-21 15:38:54

I love some pet names.
In our family we have Bubs or Bubbles.
Loddle
Ratty Lou
I am often referred to as Nana Sing song or Nana Yumyum.
Always using Poppet, Sweetie, my darling, Pickle and others when addressing Grandchildren.

Roman Helmet - because her hair is that shape (in 30 years, it's never been a different style or colour) and is absolutely plastered to her head with gel.

Keyhole Kate - she looks like her, very thin and wiry, but also a gossip.

Grandpajo Sat 18-Dec-21 14:18:07

We've got nicknames for the neighbors -
Father Ted and his wife Rusty
Keyhole Kate

I dread to think what people might call us (but we don't really care)

So funny these.grin.Why Keyhole Kate and Roman Helmet?

Shelflife

I come from Yorkshire, no longer there. A pet name for people we love is ‘ chicken’ goodness knows why ? When either of our two small GC arrive I greet them with “ Hello chicken” It causes them great amusement !

I love that name.Wish she'd used that.Must admit I call grandaughter Minxie so I'm guilty of it too.

Grandpajo Sat 18-Dec-21 10:33:21

When my Grandaughter comes in she shouts her pet name(Nanny.......
) really loud.I know this sounds silly but my grandauter starting to say that's not her name, her own name if you see what I mean.Poo poo head...I wish she could have come up with something else.I dunno probably doesn't matter in the scheme of things

Grandpajo Sat 18-Dec-21 10:24:59

I love being a Grandpa obviously. But I don't like being called Granpajo when it's just the wife and kids around

Grandpajo Sat 18-Dec-21 10:22:58

It's sort of half and half.Being 50's it's confusing as to whether I want to be a Dad or a Grandpa...if you get what I mean.

FannyCornforth Sat 18-Dec-21 10:00:27

Just read your last post. That’s not great either.
