Heard a song this evening from my sons bedroom reminded me of a couple of songs my mother played over and over.
Seasons in the sun many a Sunday morning by Terry Jacks
My sweet Lord by George Harrison.
Interested if you can remember music from your parents played regularly, albums or singles.

Some of you must be very young!
My mum liked Magic Moments. They used to play it in Woolworths a lot.
My dad liked Mrs Mills or Russ Conway on the piano. He also liked a song called 'Tammy' and bought the 45rpm for our Dansette.
I came in at Elvis.

I grew up listening to Herb Alpert, Perry Como, Glenn Miller and Elvis. They were my parents favourites. In later years mum absolutely adored Queen and Freddy Mercury. I can still hear dad singing Magic Moments.

My Mum and Dad loved Mary’s Boy Child by Harry Belafonte and whenever I hear it I think of them, sadly not very often after Boney M made their version. Mum loved anything by Jim Reeves and Dad loved anything by Alma Cogan or Ruby Murray. As pop music came in they liked The Bachelors, Dad liked You’re My World by Cilla Black and Mum loved Yesterday by The Beatles.

DH’s father was a huge fan of Shirley Bassey.
When she was on a TV show he would move his chair closer to the screen and ask everyone to ‘shushh’.

My Dad was a great lover of Glenn Miller and String of Pearls was a def favourite.

My dad was a Glen Miller fan as well,"In the mood" echoed around our house along with Keneth Mackellar singing Rabbie Burns "My love is like a red red rose".
Mum was always on the" Isle of Capri" and "Take you home again Kathleen".

My parents both liked The Seekers and Val Doonican. We used to watch Val's television show every week.
Dad also really liked Nana Mouskouri but Mum used to be rude about her; Mum was a very jealous woman I realised as I grew older ?

I would have played My Sweet Lord not my parents!
My parents were Irish so they liked a lot of Irish music. My mother loved Michael Holiday, Jim Reeves, Bing Crosby, Perry Como and Mario Lanza. Whenever I hear Magic Moments I think of her.

We're having fun, sitting in the backseat, kissing and hugging with Fred.

EllanVannin. I still have the 45 rpm “Honey”with “Danny” on the flip side. I listened to them all the time when awaiting my first baby!

As for my parents, they loved musicals, so I grew up somewhere between Oklahoma! and South Pacific!

The carpenters, 'Close to you'.
My mum would jokingly sing some of the words to dad, but thinking about it now, she really meant them. smile
Lots and lots of music in our house; we always had the radio on.

I used to like "The age of aquarius" and the one about the lightening tree, and the green green grass of home.

I grew up to the sound of Glenn Miller and I can still singalong (or humalong in some cases) to 'Chatanooga Choochoo', 'Little Brown Jug', 'Pennsylvania 6-5000', 'Moonlight Serenade', 'String of Pearls'.... haven't heard them for years now but the first beat can bring my Dad back to me. A good thing really but he only died three months ago so a bit sad too.

EllanVannin Mon 20-Dec-21 16:40:06

My mum's favourite was Bobby Goldsboro singing Honey. She used to cry thinking about dad.

Terry Jacks was 1973!

Neither of my parents listened to music other than whatever came on the radio

My parents were big on parties so grew up with everything new in the 50s. My father was either at sea or working in the London docks so had access to all the American records which very often you couldn’t get here for a long time.

Good grief! My parents were dead against anything from Bill Haley onwards. My mother did have a soft spot for Perry Como. Their hero was Bing Crosby. Oh yes, and Val Doonican. My father said that Frank Sinatra can't sing.

We did have some fun singsongs together, the four of us, with DF on the guitar. Mainly standards like "You are my sunshine" and "Alexander's Ragtime Band".

I am so glad that I can enjoy the music my kids listen to. Before they were big enough to go under their own steam I would go to gigs and festivals with them. I never missed a chance to see them perform live in their bands.

Anything with Kathleen Ferrier, Like Rowantree’s parents, classical only. I am the same on the whole, though I did know the pop songs of my teens ( pre Beatles). Much preferred the classics.

silverlining48 Mon 20-Dec-21 14:06:14

Not forgetting the very funny Joyce Grenfell

silverlining48 Mon 20-Dec-21 14:05:21

Alma Cogan and Connie Francis just came to mind. Didn’t have a record player but listened to the radio( gramme). Family Favourites usually. Lots of fun records then, elephants called Nelly, pink toothbrushes and runaway trains.
I still liked David Whitfield (because my mum did,) while my friends started listening to rock n roll. I was always a bit late with anything new.

Grew up with Acker Bilk, Matt Momroe, David Whitfeild, Ruby Murray and those piano genies Winifred Atwell and Russ Conway. Gosh even writing those names brought loads of memories back

Mum regularly sang Vera Lynn’s “there’ll be bluebirds over the white cliffs of Dover” to me when I was a child. Mum had a lovely singing voice and I often requested it. I sang it to my dcs
and now I find one of them singing it to hers.

MiniMoon Mon 20-Dec-21 10:34:19

The Flight of the Bumblebee, played on an ancient record player. My Dad had several HMV LP records made of bakelite, this was one of his favourites.
He eventually destroyed all the records and broke up the record player for parts. I'm sure those bakelite records would be worth something these days.

baubles Mon 20-Dec-21 07:05:38

Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennet as well as arias from operas.

When I was thinking up a user name for here Frank Sinatra was singing ‘Baubles bangles and beads’ in my head.

Rowantree Mon 20-Dec-21 06:45:00

Schubert, Mozart, Brahms, Beethoven mainly. My parents refused to listen to jazz, light music or pop, leaving me to hunker down with my little transistor radio in secret to avoid censure.

Hiraeth Mon 20-Dec-21 05:27:18

I remember my mum listening to the “Seekers“ There’s a new world somewhere ?
