Just an update, my problem is Tannins, I have become intolerant of tannins. It is such a joy to be free of that horrible pain and burning in my mouth that I do not mind taking all of the tannins out of my diet.

Oh how I sympathise with all BMS sufferers. I had this condition 2017 for around 6months and it was hellish.
I had it every day from wakening in the morning until getting to sleep at bedtime. I saw my GP a few times. Was given treatment for thrush as mouth swab taken showed that thrush was present - 2lots of treatment and did not work. Saw my dentist who gave me gel to use 3 times a day - did not work. I was then referred to facial surgeon who explained in some depth that she had many patients that came to see her with this. However bottom line was there seems no real explanation except that message being sent from the brain to nerves in mouth saying the mouth was burning. Consultant said stress seemed to be a major factor and anti depressants helped in some cases.
Chewing gum, ice lollies and eating were the only things that brought relief. I did not take antidepressants. How I put up with it - well I remember crying a lot.
I do believe stress is a major factor as I know even now if I get stressed I can slightly feel slight discomfort in my mouth.
My heart goes out to folks that have had it for a long time. It has such an impact on your life.
I,wish I could offer some help and I wish I had known other people suffered from it when I had it at its worst.
There is a BMS website.
Thinking of you all.

Hi there, I have suffered from this for at least 2 years and it has steadily got worse and worse. I cut tomatoes and coffee from my diet and it improved for a while and started to drink decaffeinated tea instead. I found out that taking an anti-histamine reduced the symptoms a bit and had taken to carrying them with me as a just in case. On Monday last week I had felt so ill with it that I went to my gp and he took my blood pressure as part of exam and found that it was high. Also on that same morning I had decided to stop drinking tea as it seemed to make me worse. I had to fill in a chart for a week for the gp to check my blood pressure, I couldn't believe that over the week my blood pressure dropped down and down and the burning mouth stopped. I think I had found my problem, caffeine, even the smaller amount that was was in decaf tea. On Friday of the same week I went out to a bar with my husband and I had 1/2 lager with a dash of lemonade and back came the symptoms. So now I don't know if it is caffeine or tannin, I am hoping it isn't the latter. I am to return to my gp with my blood pressure charts and will find out if I can be tested for an allergy to those 2 things.

Hi Sal me again. This is an old thread there is a more up to date thread, if you scroll a bit further down. I have every sympathy with you, I have bms, and blocked ears.I have had lots of tests done at the local dental hospital, and been to a ent specialist, but have not found anything that helps with either,I also have tinnitus and am truly fed up at the moment.Dr put me on antidepressants, but I've had to stop taking them, due to awful side effects.
If you have a look on the other thread you will find some support from fellow sufferers. Good luck.

Nannienet nothing really comes to mind that could of set it off, its been a remarkably stress free year if I'm honest.. I don't usually let stuff get to me so who knows what brought it on.. I'd never heard of it before and thought the GP was having a joke when she first mentioned it.. hope yours disappears soon...

Hi tanith
I'm hoping my BMS will go in time too,it's been nearly 12mths. Most BMS suffers experience extrem stress before the onset of BMS. Can you think of anything that will have caused you stress before it appeared?

I was diagnosed with BMS in February this year my GP near enough said the same thing that it would go on its own. No reason was obvious for it to start and I had terrible dry mouth and throat she gave me a saliva spray which helped a little.. I now only get it for the odd day here and there rather than all the time , so hopefully it will eventually go by itself. It certainly was painful at its worst. The only thing that relieved mine were sips of ice water.

When the dentist removed the first tooth,a wisdom tooth,he caused a facial bleed,he injected into a blood vessel. He said it was my fault cos my blood vessels were in an unusual place on my face!! Don't know if that caused my BMS or if I had it just before I visited the dentist with what I thought was tooth ache.
Have you got any tips?
Mine would be visit www.brainand spine.org.uk
Informative

You cannot take precautions or medication for BMS, it just seems to appear. The first sign that I had was excess saliva, which I thought was odd, this then moved onto various things, some of which I have listed before. It seems to be the general opinion that it rears it's ugly head after dental treatment, not just check-ups, but things more serious like root canal treatment or tooth removal. If you had it you would know it and if you haven't got it, then don't worry about it and thank your lucky stars!!

I have found it very comforting to know that I am not the only person suffering from this dreadful complaint. I had no previous problems with going to the dentist, well, no more than most, as my mouth had previously been very healthy, what started out as toothache ended in root canals & tooth removal. I did go and see specialists, like you susie511, one of whom just wrote out a prescription, at no time was it ever explained to me what it could do, he said "Take this" and that was it. However, prior to collecting the prescription, I checked it out on the internet, and decided not to take it. I don't like taking any medication either, unless necessary. I had the constant feeling that it was all my imagination, but then when you are having what I would call an 'Attack' it becomes abundantly clear that this is not the case, as you could not 'make up' such pain, irritation, dry mouth & burning sensation if you tried!! I am supposed to be having an implant to replace the removed tooth, fortunately it is at the back, I just cannot face it, even tho I have been told it is less painful than having a tooth removed. Trouble is, I have lost all faith in dentist & specialists.

I developed Burning mouth syndrome after a root canal treatment 2 years ago. My dentist said it was entirely coincidental and "nothing to do with her". It was agony for months and eventually my GP sent me to a specialist who said it was uncommon, but not unheard of. "Nothing we can do - should go away in time". 6 months later no better so GP put me on 10 mg Amitripyline to help me cope with it. I think this did help very slightly, but took myself off it after a year (don't like taking medication unless essential). Since then things have slowly improved - now 2+ years since original dental treatment (and have had the same, rogue tooth now removed). There are now many days I don't notice a problem at all, then for some reason I have a bad day or so again. Hot drinks are best avoided as, I think, are tomatoes and spicy food. But ... it does get easier over time - so bear with it. Things will, hopefully get better eventually!

Thank you virginiaplain, someone who understands at last.I'm not sure weather a bit of family stress caused it and I thought I had bad tooth ache and so went to a dentist or weather the work the dentist did caused it.I had a wisdom tooth and a large double tooth removed, resulting from that I got a bone infection too.All with having a dental phobia too.
I use Sensodyne Total Care Gel toothpaste, it has no SLS in it, make sure it's the green gel.I don't use a mouthwash.
I was diagnosed by a Maxifacial Surgeon, after two visits to him and a group of 5 MRI scans to rule out any other illnesses
Yes,sugar free gum is fantastic in somehow relieving the pain, sips of water and NO SPICY FOODS AT ALL!!!!! I expect I don't need to tell you that stress or tiredness make it worse. Sorry could go on and on about it. Reading is one distraction I find works. Keep smiling

I have suffered from BMS since December 2009. It originated from having various dental treatments including 4 root canals. It was very distressing and I found that some dentists/doctors did not recognised the problem, so help has been limited. I have tried many mouthwashes & gels recommended on the internet (which is the only place I could research it) but they appeared to exacerbate the symptoms so I have learnt to live with it. Sugarfree gum is a great help and avoid white wine. Over the last 3 months it has greatly improved which is a huge relief, but I truly believe it takes a long time to go away, as you say, looking after your granchild takes your mind off of it, because without some distraction it can drive you nuts
